Donner Lake Triathlon Canceled

Dear Athlete,

It is with deep regret that I write to inform you that the 2008 Donner Lake Triathlon has been canceled due to poor air quality caused by the recent and ongoing fires in the Sierras and Butte County.

For the past several days, we have been closely monitoring the air quality in the Truckee region and have posted this information on our website. We have been in contact with numerous service organizations and health officials to determine if we should proceed with the event and have been advised not to. This morning we were highly disappointed that the Air Quality Index had taken a drastic turn for the worse and the air in Truckee was deemed unhealthy.

Through conversations with various officials regarding the fire, the predicted winds and the update from the Tahoe National Forest Service, the local fire is not projected to be contained and the smoke is expected to remain poor for at least another week.

This has been an agonizing decision for us to make. The health and safety of our participants is the paramount factor in every decision and we truly feel it is in your best interest to cancel the triathlon. By canceling the triathlon today, we give our participants the opportunity to cancel any hotel reservations and possibly save on unnecessary travel expenses.

"We are excited to offer this new start time to our athletes, as we feel it will further enhance the overall event experience," said Steve Meckfessel, Ironman 70.3 Events Director. "The city of Boise has so much to offer participants and spectators." Ultra Endurance Triathlon Race or a 10 hour Party?

burrito union 10 hr triSuperior, WI (June, 12, 2008) - If you are planning on participating in the 2nd annual Burrito Union 10-hour Triathlon at Pattison State Park in Wisconsin, you better bring your swim, bike and run stuff as well as your grill, cooler and lawn chair; this race is a party!

Here’s how it works. The triathlon consists of a 600 meter swim, 14 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. The person or team that does the most triathlons in the quickest time in 10 hours wins. You can do the race solo, as a 2-person relay, or 3-person relay.

Co-race director, Rod Raymond says, “The BU 10-hour is for partiers with an exercise problem! We’ll have a hot tub at the park, karaoke, open mic w/ guitar and bongos, and tons of food and beverages. Last year we had some teams do one triathlon, then stoke up the grill and cheer the rest of the day. It was hilarious! So while your teammates are out pounding it out on the bike, you could be behind the microphone singing ‘Blowin in the wind.’”

Co-race director Clayton Keim states that, “while this race is fun and laid back, the organization is top notch. We have a great timing crew, water safety team, road officials, great give-aways and sweet awards. This is a great course with a down home crowd. You will leave different than you were when you arrived!”

If you are looking for a unique experience, rustle up some other crazy and wacky friends and check out the Burrito Union 10-hour triathlon on September 6, 2008 in Superior, Wisconsin.

Officials Relocate Hy-Vee Triathlon to West Des Moines

hyveetriathlon.jpgAccording to a story in The Des Moines Register (Hy-Vee Triathlon to be held in West Des Moines) the Hy-Vee Triathlon will be relocated to West Des Moines because of flooding in the city of Des Moines, Iowa. The 2-day event is scheduled for June 21-22. The move could cause havoc in the USA Olympic Triathlon Team selection process.

At this point as a result of the move, the age-group triathlon race will be turned into a Duathlon which will consist of a 10km Run, a 40km Bike and another 5km Run.

Officials have not determined the final details for the Des Moines BG Triathlon World Cup. Without a swimming stage, the Hy-Vee Triathlon may not meet the requirements as a USA Olympic qualifier event. Hy-Vee Triathlon officials and the International Triathlon Union will decide whether to include a swimming stage or not.

The Hy-Vee Triathlon is part of an Olympic qualifying system that will determine the final male and female representatives for the team representing the United States in August in Beijing, China.

Officials will be working feverishly to finalize all details especially with USA Triathlon to determine whether it will be part of the USA Olympic qualifying process or not. Things could still change if the weather conditions in Iowa don't improve. For further details, check the event website: Hy-Vee Triathlon

Ironman Coeur d’Alene Swim Course Concerns

Ironman Coeur d’AleneIf you are racing Ironman Coeur d’Alene on June 22 make sure to look into getting a neoprene swim cap and aqua socks because the water is and probably will be COLD! Usually those types of items are not allowed at an Ironman event but an exception might be made this year because all of the snow they received has kept the lake water cold.

Race organizers are planning on adding another hot tub to the transition area and another tent that will be blowing / circulating hot air inside the tent.

New Prize Incentives for Record Breakers at Ironman South Africa

R100,000 Up For Grabs For Record Breakers At Ironman South Africa.

Record breakers at the 2009 Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa will receive a R10,000 bonus for any record broken in either the swim, cycle or run. If a new course record is set R20,000 will be awarded. This bonus applies to both men and women, which means a total of R100,000 (Roughly $13,200 USD) could be awarded to athletes over and above the other prize money.

Triangle SA, organizers of Ironman South Africa, announced this new incentive as entries for the 2009 event officially opened. "The reason we introduced this monetary incentive is to both encourage and reward athletes who break records within the race itself," says race director Paul Wolff. "Often an athlete is strong at one discipline, but may not always finish on the podium or even be in the running for prize money. Take Anton Storm, who was first out of the water at this year's event and set a new swim record of 47:06. Anton, competing in his first full Ironman, struggled to the finish in 191st place but was motivated to do so as his swim record would only stand if he completed the entire race."

Ironman China and Ironman 70.3 China Course Preview

The inaugural running of Ironman China and the Ironman 70.3 China triathlons is scheduled to take place in less than two weeks; on April 20, 2008 to be exact. This will be fourth Ironman race scheduled to take place in the month of April in 2008. The races are set to take place on island of Hainan a vacation gem set in the South China Sea, basically China's version of Hawaii. The island features pristine blue waters teeming with reef fish and unspoiled white-sand beaches set against a lush tropical background, . It is a rapidly developing international destination with world-class facilities, including five-star resort hotels. Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, offers all the facilities important to a triathlon, such as roads, communications, high-speed Internet service, and governmental cooperation. All factors considered, Haikou is a world-class venue with all the amenities necessary to make your stay enjoyable.

There are many first's tied to these two events. After many attempts, this will be the first time China get's its own Ironman race off the ground and it will be the first time an Ironman 70.3 race has been staged in the country as well. Also unique is that both race will take place on the same day and will be the first time that a full-distance Ironman and Ironman 70.3 race will be staged at the same venue on the same day. Roughly 700 people have decided to register for these races without much knowledge of the area and the course. Of the 700 triathletes roughly 185 of them will be from the host country while nearly 100 of them will be from the United States the rest of the participants are comprised of a broad mix of participants from around the world.

Many triathletes do some sort of research before choosing to participate in a race, especially for these types of distances. In this case we don't know much about the area, the course, the organization and what it takes to get there but we will sure find out once the race is over with race coverage, pictures and blog posts all over the internet. For those participating and wondering what the area might look like here is a course preview video for the Ironman China and Ironman 70.3 China triathlon races.

ITU Launches Olympic Triathlon Website

beijingtriathlonpict.jpgVancouver, Canada (February 18, 2008) - With exactly six months to go until the Triathlon competition at the Beijing Olympic Games, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) launched its official Olympic website, www.triathlon.org/olympics.

"As we near the pinnacle of our sport, we recognize that attention on triathlon will be at a premium so we created this website to satisfy the appetite for Olympic news and updates," said Loreen Barnett, ITU Executive Director. "Our media team has done a marvelous job of developing the site to be the first destination the public and media would visit for everything related to Olympic triathlon."

The site contains an abundance of useful information and the latest Olympic news for the media and fans including a continually updated list of athletes nominated to their Olympic teams (with full athlete profiles) and a breakdown of the complex qualifying process. Now comes word that the race has been postponed until March of 2009.

Here is an excerpt from an email being sent to participants:

As a result of some operational challenges, we have made the difficult
decision to postpone the inaugural Island Triathlon SeriesT until March of
2009.

It is our vision to create a unique property that redefines the sport of
triathlon. Given the complexities of the event from a logistical
perspective, the substantial financial resources required, and our
reputation for excellence as a 4 time international award-winning event
producer, we require more time to put our best foot forward.

They had assembled some big time professionals to come race in the Caribbean at their race, such as 2007 Ironman World Champ Chris McCormack and Lisa Bentley, Nina Kraft, Chris Legh, Chris Lieto, Kim Loeffler and Marino Vanhoenacker as well as celebrity triathlete Andy Baldwin.

Longhorn Half Becomes Next Ironman 70.3 Race

If you skip the ads in the triathlon related magazines you miss a lot.

On page 133 of the February 2008 issue of Triathlete Magazine there is ad for the Ironman 70.3 Series, is shows the 2008 Event Schedule. If you had looked at it closely you would have noticed the quite addition of the Longhorn Ironman 70.3 race on October 5th, 2008. It seems that the issue arrived before the press release or announcement was scheduled. It sounds like that will occur tomorrow.

The Longhorn Triathlon Festival, usually took place in Austin in October with a Half iron, an Olympic distance and Sprint distance race. Basically what's happening is that the Longhorn Triathlon Festival will be no more. In its place will be two new triathlon events. The first one being the Longhorn Ironman 70.3 triathlon race in October. The other one would incorporate the Sprint and Olympic distance triathlon from the Longhorn Triathlon Festival into a new event called the Hi-Fi Tri. This event would take place a few weeks later at Moody Gardens, in Galveston, Texas.

Stayed tuned for additional information that should become available tomorrow.
