We have one new race on the Ironman schedule this year. This past year the World Triathlon Corporation added a new race to the schedule when they selected Louisville, Kentucky to host the Ford Ironman Louisville triathlon in August of 2007. This brings the number of qualifying races for the Ford Ironman World Championship to 29 if you include the qualifying slots available from some of the Ironman 70.3 races. The Ford Ironman World Championship race will be held in Kona, Hawaii in October. An Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile Swim, 112 mile Bike and a 26.2 mile Run. Only certain races only offer qualifying slots to the 2007 championship race because of their scheduled date, the other races have slots available for the 2008 championship race. The sport of triathlon appears to be on fire, it’s just as hot as the awesome bike split Normann Stadler had at the Ironman World Championship this past year. The number of participants seems to be on the rise evident as some triathlons are selling out in matter of hours or days. The number of events we have to choose from each year keeps expanding. New vendors are entering the lucrative triathlon market while others continue to spend R&D dollars designing new technologically advanced gear for us. NOTE: This post was getting too long, so we are going to split it up into several posts. This blog entry will focus on the triathlon changes and new races for the year.

The tentative schedule for the 2007 XTERRA Global Tour will consist of 20 championship races this year, all which will lead up to the XTERRA World Championship race in Hawaii in October. The races are open to both pro and amateur competitors. Each of the races will have 34 slots up for grabs for the world championship race; they are given to the top ranking amateurs in each division. The XTERRA Global Tour gives athletes around the world a chance to race in some of the most spectacular and challenging courses on the planet. A traditional XTERRA championship race consists of a 1.5km swim, 30km mountain bike and a 10km trail run. The Global Tour will start in February with the inaugural race in Argentina.

The International Triathlon Union announced the BG Triathlon World Cup calendar for 2007. The world cup is a series of Olympic distance (1.5km Swim, 40km Bike, 10km Run) races organized and sanctioned each year by the International Triathlon Union. The world cup triathlons are draft legal on the bike leg. This year the series will consist of 16 world cup triathlon races in 15 countries on 5 continents. The prize money for all of the 2007 world cups will be a minimum of $100,000 USD, thanks in part to the ITU's new global partner, BG Group.

The 50 state qualifier triathlons for the 2007 Best of the U.S. National Championship race have been announced. The fastest male and female resident amateurs at each of the triathlons earns the right to represent themselves and their state at the Best of the U.S. Championship. The 2007 championship triathlon race will take place at Cypress Gardens Adventure Park in Winter Haven, FL on Saturday, October 6th, 2007.

Registration to most of the Ironman races in North America tends to sell out in a matter of hours while other races seem to take days, weeks or even months to reach their maximum capacity. Currently in Europe both Ironman Austria and Ironman Germany are Sold Out. Ironman Switzerland, which is set to take place on Sunday, June 24th, 2007 in the beautiful city of Zürich is about to reach its maximum capacity of 1,850 athletes. At the time of this entry on December 21st, only 110 entries remained. If you were pondering the idea of registering for this wonderful race, the time is now, you must take action be for the opportunity disappears. The registration fee for Ironman Switzerland is CHF 550 or roughly $453 US Dollars.

The World Triathlon Corporation continues it's expansion of the 1 year old Ironman 70.3 series with the addition of the Ironman 70.3 Austria triathlon set to take place on Saturday, June 2, 2007 in St. Pölten, Austria. The 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike and 21.1 km run will take place in the wine-country of Lower Austria, which is just 50 minutes from Vienna. The race has a limit of 1,500 athletes; all who will vie for the 75 slots for the 2007 Ford Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Clearwater, Florida. This will be the 5th Ironman 70.3 race to take place in Europe.

Registration is now open for inaugural Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore triathlon scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 2nd, 2007. This is one of the new races from the World Triathlon Corporation scheduled to take place in 2007 in the 70.3 series which now has 20 races scheduled around the world. This will be the first Ironman 70.3 event to ever take place in Asia and and will have 75 slots for the 2007 Ford Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Clearwater, Florida. Event organizers are expecting some 600 - 800 participants for the inaugural race. The climate for the island nation of Singapore is relatively similar to that of Hawaii and Florida, so expect average highs of 88º F and lows of 75º F with humidity in the 70% - 80% range.
