Inside, was a new pair of one of the latest minimalist shoes to hit the market, the Instinct running shoes from Altra. What, another pair of minimalist shoes? Do we really need another? From the minute I opened the box, it was clear that these shoes are very different from those marketed by the larger companies. The packaging itself shouts out that a group of runners designed these from the ground up. Better yet, the shoe fit my foot like a glove when I slipped the right one on.

In full disclosure, I am a true minimalist shoe convert. When I restarted running about 7 years ago, I followed conventional wisdom and began buying stability shoes to "protect" my flat feet. As the injuries started to mount, I kept ratcheting up the amount of "stability" that shoes would provide. Ironically, the more stability I added, the more frequently I founded myself nursing tender muscles. A long bout of plantar fasciitis pushed me into Newton Shoes and now finally Vibram Five Fingers. Along the way, I rebuilt my running form and have raced for 2 years with minimal problems.

I get a lot of questions about these shoes from people who know I run with them. The first question is usually around how to get used to them. Altra addresses this from the first moment you open the box. Underneath the lid are clear instructions about proper running, how to make the transition, and what makes these shoes unique.

The shoes feel great for me. Altra Running crafted an unusually wide and loose toe box. The spacing will allow your toes to spread and get stronger. I have a very wide forefoot now and the shoe fits perfectly. Though I really like my Vibrams, I have been looking for a shoe that runs comfortably on crushed stone surfaces, offers more insulation when the road is very cold, and better ventilation when it's very hot. Over the next two weeks, I will try these shoes and give you a full report.

The ElliptiGO 3C is an elliptical bike trainer that you can use outdoors instead of inside at a gym. This new model has been updated with three-speeds and features a lower price.

ElliptiGO, the creators of the world's first elliptical bike announced the availability of the ElliptiGO 3C, a new three-speed elliptical bike. The introduction of the 3C expands the elliptical biking category, introducing more consumers to the fun and exhilaration of the ElliptiGO experience. By combining the best elements of cycling with the natural strides of the running motion, the ElliptiGO 3C delivers a high-performance, low-impact workout for all active adults, from casual exercisers to cross-training athletes. The 3C joins the original ElliptiGO elliptical bicycle, the 8S, in the company's current product line for consumers.

"We created the 3C to deliver a high-performance workout experience with less impact by combining the most popular cardio exercises--running, cycling and the elliptical trainer--into one incredibly fun to use product," said Bryan Pate, co-founder and co-president, ElliptiGO. "The riding experience is similar to that of our original 8S elliptical bike but at a lower price point, allowing us to reach more people with this new form of exercise. We are excited to continue growing the elliptical bicycle category as well as the community of ElliptiGO riders and enthusiasts." The ElliptiGO 3C retails for $1,799.

Key user experience elements include:
• High Performance, Low Impact - The elliptical motion of the ElliptiGO 3C closely mimics the running experience with all of the cardiovascular benefits and none of the impact
• Comfortable Riding - Users can customize the 3C frame and stride for the most comfortable cycling experience. The telescoping steering column is adjustable to accommodate riders of heights from 5'0" to 6'8", and the elliptical stride length can also be modified to accommodate different stride preferences and pedaling profiles
• Handling and Maneuverability - The 3C is designed to handle and maneuver similar to a conventional road bike. Riders can steer, turn, brake and ride smoothly on both flat terrain and mild hills
• Intuitive Movement - The 3C is powered by an elliptical or running-like movement that most active adults are already very comfortable with, allowing new users to become comfortable riding within a short period of time

Key ElliptiGO 3C features include:
• Aluminum-Based - The drive arms and frame of the 3C are made from 6000 and 7000 series aluminum alloys selected for their light weight, performance and durability
• Customized Gearing for Performance on the Flats - The 3C is built around a Sturmey-Archer three-speed internally-geared hub that offers ElliptiGO riders who ride mostly in flat areas an ideal range of speeds. On the 3C, ElliptiGO riders can cruise comfortably on the flats at speeds of 12-15 mph or get a good training session in by pushing it to a max speed of 20-25 mph. Additionally, the three-speed gear range enables 3C riders to climb some hills (up to five percent grade inclines), making it a great workout tool in most environments
• New Colors - The 3C will be available in green, black and orange. Green and black are ElliptiGO's signature and most popular colors, while orange is a new color selected by popular demand from ElliptiGO customers who are looking for a color that is visible and safe on the road and has a sleek, high-performance feel

"We developed the 3C to enable anyone who is looking to train primarily on the flats to enjoy a fantastic workout experience at a lower price point. We were able to achieve this cost reduction without sacrificing a high-performance workout experience by tailoring the riding experience for flatter areas," said Brent Teal, co-founder, lead engineer and chief product designer, ElliptiGO. "As a result, the 3C is an accommodating elliptical bicycle that can support the needs of a wide range of users, from casual exercisers to elite athletes."

Forerunner 610 can stand up to rain, sweat and splashes, and is responsive enough that it can be operated with running gloves. Forerunner 610 was announced in preparation for world-class marathons in Boston and London as well as the Australian fitness expo.

"Running with Forerunner 610 is like having a coach with you every step of the way," said Andy Silver, Outdoor and Fitness Product Manager. "From giving the basics such as pace, distance and time to monitoring your effort through heart rate, creating interval workouts and racing a friend on the other side of the world, Forerunner 610 becomes a necessary partner for all serious runners."

Now it is easier than ever to see how far, how fast and how hard you have worked. Forerunner 610 puts it all at your fingertips. Designed for the runner who is constantly seeking improvement, Forerunner 610 is Garmin's new flagship model. Forerunner 610's sleek stylish design complements the highly responsive touch screen and high resolution display. This innovative design has drawn praise from the International design community by winning the coveted Red Dot Design Award, the world's largest and most renowned design competition in a field of thousands of submissions from over 60 countries.
With the heart rate monitor, Forerunner 610 also allows runners to track their training intensity via the new Training Effect feature. With the right information, it is not necessary to be a coach or sports scientist to help you train effectively. Training Effect measures the impact of exercise on aerobic fitness and lets you know how the workout improves your fitness during the workout.

The Oiselle clothing doesn't resemble any other running brands, let's face it a lot of running clothing is boring and not exactly fashionable. Oiselle has its own unique personality, is is sophisticated with subtle and elegant graphics, it doesn't use the typical bold bright "in your face" graphics that many running companies use. "Oiselle"(pronounced wa-zell) means female bird in French and alludes to the feeling of weightlessness that most runner's know and love. That sense of flight- when your legs go fast and your heart goes free.

Sally Bergeson, the founder of Oiselle, was dissatisfied with the running shorts she was finding on the market. Nobody was offering the kind of low-rise, makes-you-want-to-run fast shorts that she envisioned and then created. The Oiselle shorts are unique from most running shorts in many ways; they have removable drawstrings because when they fit right you don't need one, they don't have tags that create irritation, they have liners that compliment the shells, and they feature a subtle logo so you can focus on your run rather than looking like a billboard. The shorts are made to give you a sense of flight and weightlessness.

The Oiselle line features stylish high performance running and active lifestyle apparel. The brand follows what is hot on the runway and translates it to what is hot on the track. Oiselle uses high quality performance materials to keep you dry and comfortable, and the best part is that the clothing is very reasonably priced for the high level of technical design and quality.
Customers rave about how light weight and comfortable the Distance shorts are and how soft the Tee's are. The line satisfies the demand for active lifestyle apparel. This is apparel that you can wear while running errands or running races; it allows you flexibility, comfort and fashion all at the same time.

May your next run have a little Oiselle in it, where you will reach that sense of flight- when your legs go fast and your heart goes free! This is the single most important resource for people who want to enjoy running as nature intended while protecting themselves from unnatural surfaces. Learn to run the barefoot way--with shoes--and become a more efficient, stronger and healthier runner.

Backed by studies at MIT and Harvard, running form guru and injury expert Abshire presents the natural running technique, form drills, and an 8-week transition plan, complete with a tool kit of strength and form drills that build and maintain the musculature required for natural running. This book will put you on the path to faster, more efficient, and healthier running.

In the book Abshire explains how modern running shoes distort the efficient running technique that humans evolved over thousands of years. He reviews the history of running shoes and injuries, making the case for barefoot running but also warning about its dangers. By learning the natural running technique, runners can enjoy both worlds--comfortable feet, knees, and legs and an efficient running form that reduces impact and injuries.

Natural Running teaches runners to think about injuries as symptoms of poor running form. Abshire specifies the overuse injuries that are most commonly associated with particular body alignment problems, foot types, and form flaws. Runners will learn how to analyze and identify their own characteristics so they can start down the path to natural running.

"Danny Abshire has devoted his professional life to studying and teaching proper and efficient running technique. He has worked with some of the best runners and triathletes in the history of endurance sports, and just speaking to him will make you a better runner." - Craig Alexander, two-time Ironman World Champion

Natural Running is the newest way to run and also the oldest. By discovering how they were meant to run, runners will become more efficient, stronger, and healthier runners.

Here is a product that will help you stay cool on those longer distance triathlon events. It made its limited debut at the 2009 Ironman World Championship race in Kona and now it's available to everyone. Protect yourself from the sun and heat while staying cool with the new Zoot Arm Cooler Sleeves. Unlike Arm Warmers which keep you warm in cold conditions, these Arm Coolers are designed to keep you cooler in hot weather while out on the bike and run course.

The Zoot Arm Cooler Sleeves are made with Ice-Fil fabric, a multi step skin cooling technology. The cooling fabric thrives in hot and humid conditions with its moisture-absorbing properties. The fabric surface treatment absorbs heat from the body and blocks infrared rays from the sun, actually reducing skin temperature by 5°F / 3°C by converting sweat to a refrigerant. The sleeves are moisture-wicking, quick-drying, breathable and anti-bacterial, with measurable skin-cooling capability and built-in sun U.V. protection.

If you are fortunate enough to wear a long sleeve wetsuit on the swim, put these Arm Coolers on before putting on your wetsuit, that way you won't have to deal with putting them on after your swim. Don't worry if they get wet, the water will evaporate and give you a cooling effect. For non-wetsuit swims or with a sleeveless wetsuit, roll the Arm Cooler Sleeves into donut shapes, that way you can slip them on up to your wrist and then roll them up your arm.

Remember this, when things get hot out on your bike or run, make sure to stay hydrated and also pour water on the Zoot Arm Cooler Sleeve to experience the cooling effect.

MSRP: $35.00
Do you wish could special order the perfect fit without spending having to spend a lot money? Did you know that Somnio Running has a line of biomechanical customizable running shoes. Breaking new ground in the running shoe industry, Somnio shoes feature an adjustable component system that creates a custom-fit to match each runner's unique biomechanics.

Founded on the premise that shoes should adapt to the runner, not the other way around, Somnio shoes can adapt to (or correct) the particular alignment, arch and cushioning needs of each runner's foot. Developed at the prestigious Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, the current line consists of 6 base models for men and women, and 12 adjustable inserts that can be combined to create over 11,664 different possible configurations for each shoe size. Each model features Somnio's signature F.E.A.T. system (Functionally Engineered Adaptable Tricomponent System), which includes various customizable components that can be fine tuned for the perfect, gait-efficient fit. The custom components include:

• Interchangeable footbeds for a custom fit based on the runner's arch height
• Interchangeable IndX cushion inserts for long lasting cushioning and customization based on weight and preferred usage
• Tunable Varus angulation for addressing each runner's particular biomechanical needs - just like having a custom-made orthodic made specifically for the shoe

There is a huge benefit to being correctly aligned in your shoes, both for running and everyday activities. With its revolutionary F.E.A.T. system, Somnio can improve an individual's biomechanics through adjustability of the shoes key components.

"Every runner is different, and we believe that every pair of running shoes should be different," explained Somnio founder Sean Sullivan. "We built a platform for making that possible. Our exclusive system of almost infinite shoes and limitless possibilities was developed in the nation's leading sports medicine lab, and then tested and refined there on real runners."

The Somnio Running Shoe line consists of the following shoes for both men and women and fully customizable:
• Stability
• Lightweight Neutral

Before founding Somnio, Sean Sullivan was head of product development for top brands like The North Face, Pearl Izumi and Specialized bikes where he helped launch the bike company's Body Geometry line of customized bike shoes. An avid runner all his life, Sean immediately saw a need for customization in the running shoe industry. He enlisted the help of Dr. Andy Pruitt in the human performance lab at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine to create the Somnio system and a patented fitting tool that evaluates a runner's foot to determine the correct prescription of inserts needed.

"The Boulder Center for Sports Medicine played a key role in the development and testing of Somnio running shoes," said Sullivan. "Dr. Pruitt's knowledge of both treating and preventing running injuries led to the concept of adapting the shoe to each runner's biomechanics."

Somnio dealers across the country will have access to Somnio's biomechanics training programs to be held at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine in Boulder, CO throughout the year.
The new brand is far from a gimmick line of footwear, here are a few facts. The name of the company 20 Degrees North comes from the latitudinal coordinate for the Hawaiian Islands, where the XTERRA race series has its roots. Co-owners and designers Ashley Brown and T.J. Gray run in three to four triathlons annually. For the past 15 years they have designed top-of-the line gear for almost every major athletic company, including Nike, Puma and Under Armour. Now the pair is attempting to carve out a niche in the underserved market of off-road trail running shoes in the outdoor recreation market.

Their research led them to develop a sole that mimics an animal’s paw which molds and changes shape to stay balanced. To do this the company is using an injection molded manufacturing process usually not seen high performance shoes to provided the rubber traction pads and groves to make the shoes more like paws. The unique sole construction will help provide optimal traction, balance, comfort and cushioning. The new light weight shoes will come in a variety of bright colors.

Pre-season triathlon base training includes running outside in the winter and if you live in an area with cold winters like I do you want to have the right type of clothing to stay warm. One of the essential components to staying warm while running outdoors is a good pair of winter running tights. Running in Minneapolis this winter was frigid, the temperatures were low and the brisk winds were always there. This review will focus on 3 pair of winter running tights from 3 different manufactures (Craft, Pearl Izumi, Under Amour ) I tried out this winter to stay warm.

The testing occurred in various degrees of cold, from a low of around 4 to a high of around 27. Each product was tested the same way but on separate occasions. The lengths of the runs varied between 6 to 9 miles. I always tested these products out with a pair of Craft Gore Wind Stop Gunde Boxer underwear.

Each product had similar characteristics like front panel wind barrier fabric, water-resistant protection, lower leg zippers for easy on-off access and a tight fit around your ankles. They all have breathable / moisture management rear panels, which works but the downside is if you have a brisk tailwind while running your behind and legs are going to get cold. The Craft and the Pearl Izumi products had a thin fleece lining while the Under Amour product did not.

Winter Running Tights Review

Craft Storm Tight (MSRP: $109.99)
- I liked the nice fit of these tights, they were comfortable, perfect length and warm
- The articulated knees give the tights the proper flexibility when you are running
- Reflective piping on the front and back for early morning and early evening runs
- The one thing this pair of tights was missing was a key / credit card pouch
- These Craft tights are a bit pricey but now I know why, they are well worth it when trying to stay warm while running outside in the winter.

Pearl Izumi AmFIB Tight (MSRP: $99.99)
- This pair of tights unlike the other two has a patch of the windproof and water-resistant material on the rear for additional warmth which is really nice when you have a brisk tail wind while running.
- These tights had a tighter fit; they were still comfortable and kept me nice and warm.
- These tights did have a key / credit card pouch on the inside.
- The cut on the front of the tights made them feel like low riders or like they were coming down while running, every so often I would pull them up because I thought they were falling down.
- The tighter fit seemed to cause the tights to come up a bit. These tights did not have any special fabrication around the knees like the other two pair of tights.

Under Amour Cold Gear Metal Volcano Tight (MSRP: $79.99)
- They do have a nice external, rear, easy access key / credit card pouch
- The wind barrier stopped the wind but the lack of a fleece liner made these tough to wear when the temps were low
- I had to buy a size up because they didn’t feel right around the knees even though it looked like they tried to implement something to take care of the issue. The bigger size allows a nice comfortable fit with long thermal underwear. On one occasion I used a pair of Craft Gore Wind Stop Long Underpants with these tights.
- The product label states “Ideal Use: Temperatures Under 55° F” along with a slightly unbelievable statement “ColdGear fabric accomplishes the impossible: it keeps you warm without weighing you down”. I really wouldn’t consider these cold weather gear tights unless you plan on wearing thermal underwear under them for additional warmth when it’s below 25° F.

In conclusion, you do get what you pay for; if you want to stay warm and comfortable then you need to pay a little more. If you pay less, you’ll probably make up the difference when purchasing a pair of thermal underwear to go along with them. I really did like the pair of Craft Storm Tights and would recommend them to anyone who runs outside in the winter. During my winter training this winter with friends, several other people did have the same pair of Craft tights and they swear by them as well. I liked the Pearl Izumi AmFIB Tights, they kept me warm as well but the fit was just a bit different. I did take my Under Armour tights on a bike triathlon training trip to Italy and wore them over my bike shorts. They worked really nice with the temps that were between 40° F and 50° F, under windy and cool conditions.

Now that winter is over it’s the perfect time to shop for next year’s winter gear at reduced prices. Check it out and be prepared for those cold days that might pop next year.

This was an un-solicited and an un-paid review of these products. TRIjuice rating scale from 1 to 5 with 1 being fair and 5 being good.
