Bike. Run. These three words have taken on new meaning as people across the country are taking up the call to be fit for life by becoming a triathlete.

There aren't many things out there that can compare to the exhilaration you feel the first time you race. But what happens once you have accomplished your first or even your tenth triathlon. After awhile the rhythm of the race starts to seem mundane and the only thing that challenges you is forgoing the towel dry so you can shave a few seconds of you transition time.

To all those people out there who think that participating in triathlons becomes boring after awhile and that most running races place too much emphasis on individual times, do not despair. Dave Ballard, CEO of Round House Racing has an alternative and it's called: Tri-Umph.

2012 Tri-Umph Adventure Triathlon Locations

When: September 1, 2012
Where: Vail Lake Resort, CA

When: September 22, 2012
Where: Portland, OR

When: October 13, 2012
Where: Reveille Peak Ranch, TX

Website: www.triumphrace.com

Tri-Umph was born out of the idea that traditional triathlons need to be shaken up. Tri-Umph is the first of its kind to combine the challenge of the off-road triathlon and the excitement of a mud run. The entire race is laced with obstacles that you might see at a mud run... except Tri-Umph has obstacles in the swimming and biking portions as well. Tri-Umph is a sprint distance (750me swim, 20km mountain bike ride, 5km run) triathlon where each leg will test and thrill you. So whether you're a triathlon pro or just a mud run freak we guarantee you've never seen anything like this before.

Triathlon Redefined starts off with swimming where athletes quickly find obstacles like a floating balancing log or an inflatable mountain they have to climb. There are obstacles that provide a resting spot for those that need it like the lily pad leap and others where they have to swim over and under pipes.

The race then transitions to the biking portion where participants find themselves mountain biking on dirt trails through a myriad of obstacles. It then concludes with the running portion of the race. However, the mud-run style 5km offers unique and fun obstacles that haven't been seen anywhere else. When participants pass the finished line exhausted they know what it means to Tri-Umph.

Ballard tells that the idea for an off-road triathlon came to him while he was running a race that overlooked a beautiful mountain lake setting thinking how a triathlon should be held there. He knew that a lot of people avoided triathlons because of the swimming portion.

"I thought what if you could put rest areas along the way or somehow break up the monotony of the swim," said Ballard. "Then it hit me we need to have water obstacles. Obstacles will allow people to have a rest from the swim and provide a fun challenge to everyone. If people are having fun swimming or running for that matter than why wouldn't people do that race."

The format of this one-of-a-kind race is designed to get more people involved in triathlons by making the swim portion more fun. The obstacles, such as the floating lily pads, have more appeal to those who are hesitant to swim for an uninterrupted amount of time.

The minimum age to compete in the race is 16 years. The inaugural race of the Triumph series will be held September 1, 2012 in Vail Lake, California.

Triathlon: 5150 Subic Bay Philippines
When: Sunday, June 24, 2012
Where: Subic Bay, Philippines
Website: www.5150philippines.com

Triathlon, the fastest growing sport in the world is growing as fast in the Philippines. Case in point, the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines in Cebu filled up registration seven whole months before the August 5, 2012 race day. Word has gone around the multi-sport world that the Philippines throws a great show. And with the staging of the inaugural Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon Series on June 24, 2012 at Subic Bay, Philippine hospitality, ingenuity, and beautiful sceneries will once again be showcased. No doubt participants, visitors, families and friends will not only say "it's more fun in the Philippines" but also proclaim "it's more fun to swim, bike, run in the Philippines."

The Olympic-distance Century Tuna 5i50 race (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) will all be within SBMA (Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority), a former U.S. Naval base, one of the two former major military bases of the United States in the Philippines, the other being Clark Airfield, which were both reverted back to the home country by the Americans in the early Nineties. Triathletes who join can say they have swum where battleships used to be, in majestic Subic Bay surrounded by breathtaking mountains. These mountains are breathtaking too on the bike leg because this race will feature some vicious climbs. But true to most run legs in Philippine Tri-races, the 10k run route will be lined with spectators, giving that extra needed boost to complete the required 51.5 kilometers total.

The title sponsor is Century Tuna, the leading tuna brand in the Philippines. Other sponsors are Alaska Milk, Summit Water, Gatorade, LBC, 2XU, Timex, Prudential Guarantee, and media partners Philippine Star and Multisport Magazine. The Century Tuna 5i50 Triahtlon Series Philippines, the first in South East Asia, is staged and organized by Sunrise Events, Inc., led by two-time Ford Ironman World Championship finisher Fred Uytengsu.

The Philippines is more than just a fantastic triathlon destination. It has a rich history, where a majority of past heritage sites centered around 300 years of Spanish rule. Contemporary lifestyles are sophisticated and cosmopolitan, where major urban centers have superb international cuisine, complete shopping experiences, and the night life is unbeatable. So after the race, and the awesome loot bag, 5i50ers should try to stay a few more days because is it is safe to say: Post-race recovery - it is more fun in the Philippines.

This is the second 5150 Triathlon Series race in the Asian market so far in 2012. In February Sri Lanka will host the first and inaugural 5150 Sri Lanka triathlon. The series now has races in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. For more information on the 5150 Triathlon Series visit: www.5150.com
February 19th 2012 marks an historic occasion as the Ironman brand will be breaking new ground with the first Ironman 70.3 event in South Asia, the first 5150 in Asia and Sri Lanka as a new host country for the global series. Colombo, which is situated on the western coast of the island, will be host city for the new triathlon races.

The New York Times named Sri Lanka the #1 place in the world to visit in 2010. So it's no secret; Sri Lanka is a jewel of South Asia waiting to be discovered by triathletes. Romantic island hideaways, a rich culture and a food lover's paradise, Sri Lanka has it all.

Shannon Kurek from HFP Racing in Ohio and race director states "Sri Lanka is an incredible destination location. Colombo is a very athlete-friendly host city that will bring everything conveniently together within walking distance from the host hotels for this inaugural Ironman 70.3 and 5150 race."

Steeped in Colonial Architecture, the city of Colombo will become a staging area for taking athletes back in time and delivering the romance of yesteryear. It will be a dynamic merriment of a modern day hi tech sport amidst an old era.

As the first race on the 70.3 calendar for Asia it's the perfect opportunity for athletes to awaken from the winter slumber and dip their toes into some warm waters and humid conditions to test the body.

We had a chance to ask organizers a few questions leading up to this year's inaugural events.

How familiar is the sport of triathlon with the locals?
The sport of triathlon itself is no stranger to the locals while the race formats of the 5150 and 70.3 are less known. In regards to athletes and sport enthusiasts, our on-site race coordinators witnessed a sprint distance triathlon in the southern portion of the island, a 10k swim in the Indian Ocean in Colombo, and an organized race for runners in Colombo, all within the same weekend - organized by independent groups!

If not, is something being done to teach them more about it?
Other than the highly significant meetings we have had with local officials, military personnel, government liaisons, the tourist board, and interested companies (advertisement/sponsorship), we have also posted flyers in public places and have volunteer workshops in the making for education on the sport of triathlon.

Sri Lanka is not a place people in the sport think about when it comes to
triathlon. How did the idea come about, picking Colombo for a new Ironman
70.3 Series race?
Well seen in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka now boasts one of the most rapidly growing economies in the world, matching the power and prestige of more familiar big cities. The country of Sri Lanka also has great potential as a host venue for an Ironman 70.3 event for the very fact that it IS unfamiliar to most people in the sport - it is an independent island detached from the mainland of the Asia subcontinent. Having reestablished independence as a country in the mid 1900s, Sri Lanka's history is more than one page deep. Rich culture is found here. Capable of hosting a world-class event while retaining the hidden getaway appeal of a tropical island, Sri Lanka is simply unique. It was selected for expansion into the south Asian region with the traveling, adventure-seeking athlete in mind. The climate provides a tropical challenge for race day, the clean and well maintained streets and public places provide ideal urban courses, while the scenic coastal city and unusually friendly locals provide a welcoming stay.

What's the expectation on getting local athletes to participant in the race?
One of the main takeaways thus far from witnessing sporting events in Sri Lanka and establishing relations with local sport coordinators is that most athletes who bike and run mostly stay away from the water. And those that are firstly swimmers have little to do with sports beyond the water. The expectation of local participation had a ceiling of 10% this year and, with a handful of Sri Lanka natives registered to compete, these numbers are on par. However, with momentum building for the sport of triathlon in this competitive format, we look forward to seeing more locals dive into the action in subsequent years!

So what challenges lie in wait for athletes racing in Sri Lanka?
If you have been to the island before, you will be familiar with the organized chaos of traffic. Did I say organized? Tut-tuts are the vehicle of choice and they manage to zip in and out everywhere. Entertaining to watch, hair-raising to try, this is Sri Lanka. And this is also why for one day on February 19th the city roads will be closed.

Imagine that? Complete closure to traffic for an ironman race; that's like music to a triathletes ear. With no traffic and a flat course, Sri Lanka is designed for the uber fast biker kitted with disk wheel and lovers of a pancake flat run course. But that doesn't mean it is going to be easy. Remember it's in the tropics; which means a consistent 81°F air temperature, 82°F sea temperature (no wet suits) and for a little fun, the humidity level in February hovers around 80%.

2005 World Ironman Champion, Faris Al-Sultan, is one Pro athlete who will be taking advantage of such a test. Al-Sultan will be participating in the 5150, a name creatively coined from the Olympic distances of a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run.

"I think it is time for Sri Lanka to develop itself as a prime holiday destination and as ambassadors for triathlon, my teammates and I are proud to support a race that brings our tough but wonderful sport to this beautiful island." - Faris Al-Sultan.

To date, joining the former world champion in the 5150 is Paul Ambrose (AUS), Luke Gillmer (AUS), Freddy Lampret (RSA), Jenny Fletcher (USA) and Rachael Paxton (AUS).

A host of Aussie athletes heading to the island and one pro who loves to race in Asia is Belinda Granger. Granger will be lining up for the 70.3. Currently alongside the multi Ironman champion and 2011 Philippines 70.3 Champion is Kristin Möller and Dana Wagner of Germany, Ironman 70.3 Bussleton champion, Tim Berkel (AUS), Ironman 70.3 Canberra Champion, Tim Reed (AUS), Phuket based Swede Fredrik Croneborg, Justin Granger (AUS) and Patrick Evoe (USA).

"I am incredibly excited about racing the inaugural Sri Lanka 70.3. What an incredible place for a race. This is a great opportunity to add yet another stunning South Asian country to my long list makes me very happy. What a great way to kick start the 2012 season." - Belinda Granger.

Triathletes should be prepared to be wowed by the hotels; plenty to choose from all within walking distance or a short tut-tut ride of each other. The Taj Samudra Hotel and Galle face hotel will literally sweep you off your feet; decadence aptly describes the experience awaiting you.

Sri Lanka is a country on many peoples "must see" list. A tropical paradise it is the perfect place to holiday and experience all that south Asia has to offer. Now with the inaugural 70.3 and 5150 coming to the island, triathletes and their families can combine the best of both worlds with this new destination, must see, must do, race venue.

If it's not on your triathlon schedule this year, then make sure to think about it for next year. Visit www.ironmansrilanka.com for more information on the race.

For the most part, triathlon is an individual sport where you swim, bike and run the entire event yourself. To entice new athletes, introduce them to the sport or even make it more of a social thing some organizers have a relay team division at their event. This is great for those who might not be comfortable in one of the particular disciplines but want to participate with their friends, family or tri club in one form or another.

The concept of Team Racing is not that common here in the U.S. unlike in other countries where Triathlon Club / Team competition is more prevalent. Yes, a few events here have Triathlon Club competitions, but it's not that big or anything like what Leon's has in store. Now that triathlon has made it to the collegiate level, we are seeing Team competition when it comes to these athletes. They race individually yet for their team, just like one would do if they were a high school or collegiate swimmer.

There is a triathlon event that is out to change this. The man behind it is Leon Wolek from Leon's World's Fastest Triathlon in Hammond, IN. His goal is to make that individual effort even more valuable and enjoyable as part of a team.

It's not about getting the best swimmer, biker and runner to for a team, that would be called a relay team. Team Challenge here is a bit different. A team here is a group of triathletes that go to a race together and do the entire race individually. At the end of the race, they take a subset of the individual times and use that to score the team against the other teams racing. That way everyone has to chance to participate in the whole event while trying to help the team win the competition. A great opportunity to share in the post race award festivities even if one faces stiff competition in their age group.

Camaraderie, fun, inspiring, rivalries, sharing in the highs and lows is what Wolek see's when people race as part of a team. These aren't your ordinary teams explained Wolek. "Imagine the NASCAR pit areas, where you have all the team members, the team tents in their team colors. Now imagine an area like that in a triathlon transition area, except no car, only triathlon bikes, maybe a mechanic and/or coach while everyone in team colors."

"Each team gets their own area with a custom made wooden bike rack to decorate as they please. They will also be able to put up and decorate a team tent adjacent to the transition area as part of the Team Challenge."

Introduced last year at Leon's Triathlon, Wolek hopes to inspire and attract more teams this year. To do so he has been talking to triathlon shops and coaches recruiting teams for this year's race in June.

"Each team has to choose a captain, just like any sports team has to do," Wolek says.

Wolek's Leon's World's Fastest Triathlon is rich in history. Now in its third year after a 15 year hiatus Wolek wants to add to the history with this concept and have this race remembered for something new.

Age groupers get their chance via qualifying slots offered mainly at Ironman events around the world. What some age groupers don't know is that some Ironman 70.3 triathlon races offer qualifying slots for Kona. Usually the number of slots at these events is smaller than on would see being offered at a regular Ironman event.

Just because the event is half the distance doesn't mean is easier to get a slot to the big dance. By far the competition for these slots is fierce and advantageous. Half the distance, half the recovery time, double the challenge.

So far for the 2012 Ironman World Championship race, the WTC has 6 Ironman 70.3 events offering slots to Kona:

• Ironman 70.3 Phuket (December 4, 2011) - 30

• Ironman 70.3 St. Croix (May 6, 2012) - 30

• Ironman 70.3 Hawaii (June 2, 2012) - 28

• Ironman 70.3 Eagleman (June 10, 2012) - 30

• Ironman 70.3 Buffalo Springs Lake (June 24, 2012) - 30

• Ironman 70.3 Japan (June 24, 2012) - 30

The Ironman 70.3 Philippines race had slots last year. Those have since been removed. It seems that they might have be re-allocated with the announcement that Ironman 70.3 Japan will now have slots for Kona.

Ironman 70.3 Centrair Tokoname Japan Offers Kona Slots
World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) today announced that general entry registration for the third annual Ironman 70.3 Centrair Tokoname Japan will open on Jan. 31, 2012. With this being the only Ironman World Championship qualifier in the region, race organizers have added additional entries; however, as in previous years, a sell-out is anticipated within just a few hours.

Scheduled for June 24, 2012, Lixil Ironman 70.3 Centrair Tokoname Japan will be staged in and around the Centrair International Airport, providing easy access to the race for visitors travelling from across the globe with direct flights from Singapore, Frankfurt and Detroit. Athletes will begin the race with a point-to-point swim at Ise Bay in the Pacific Ocean. The 1.5-loop bike course will see some changes in 2012, leading to a smoother and faster route through Tokoname city. The final leg of the course features a spectator friendly one-loop run with athletes finishing on the beach.

The event is one of nearly 60 in the global Ironman 70.3 Series, offering 25 age group qualifying slots for the 2012 Ironman World Championship 70.3, to be held on Sept. 9, 2012, at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nev. The event date was moved earlier in the season to accommodate the addition of 30 coveted age group qualifying slots to the 2012 Ironman World Championship, scheduled for Oct. 13, 2012, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. These slots will give Asia-Pacific athletes additional opportunities to make it to the starting line on Ali'i Drive in Kona. Professional athletes will be competing for a prize purse of $15,000.

Professional WTC champions will have the opportunity for expanded automatic qualifying across three world-renowned championship events: the Hy-Vee 5150 U.S. Championship, Ironman World Championship 70.3 and Ironman World Championship. Professional athletes will also have expanded opportunities for 5150 Pro Ranking (5150 PR) points with the addition of 5150 Triathlon Series races and select Ironman 70.3 races to the qualifying schedule.

This is a milestone for our sport," said Andrew Messick, Chief Executive Officer of WTC. "Automatic qualifying for our champions across the three championship events will add an interesting and competitive dynamic. With this change and the additional opportunities to earn points in the 5150 PR system, we're giving professional athletes a chance to add variety to their season and compete across different distances without compromising their qualifying opportunities. We're excited to see how this unites athletes within the triathlon community."

The 2011 Hy-Vee 5150 U.S. Championship, Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3 and Ford Ironman World Championship professional winners will each receive an automatic invitation to all three events in 2012, provided they validate their slots. With expanded automatic qualification, world champions like Craig Alexander and Melissa Rollison will not only be invited back to the race that they conquered the previous year, but also have the opportunity to race in the 2012 Hy-Vee 5150 U.S. Championship. Likewise, Greg Bennett and Lisa Norden will now be extended an invitation to compete in Kona and Las Vegas, provided they validate their slots during the 2012 qualifying period.

"It's encouraging to see WTC introduce this initiative with the 5150, Ironman 70.3 and Ironman champions getting the chance to race each other at these championship events," said Greg Bennett, 2011 Hy-Vee 5150 U.S. Championship Men's Elite Cup champion. "Over time we will see some great battles between athletes who excel in their particular arena and are getting challenged by a different distance. Bringing the best in the sport together to race each other will be brilliant for triathlon, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to race at all three championship events in 2012."

"I'm excited to hear of the new qualifying system," said Mirinda Carfrae, second-place finisher at the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship and Hy-Vee 5150 U.S. Championship. "It's an opportunity and great step by WTC to encourage the best athletes to compete at the biggest races across all distances."

The announcement of the automatic qualifying system comes at a significant point in triathlon history - prize purses are at an all-time high. Not only is the 2012 Hy-Vee 5150 U.S. Championship professional prize purse more than $1.1 million, but WTC has now increased the professional prize purse for the Ironman World Championship 70.3 and Ironman World Championship. The total 2012 Ironman World Championship 70.3 prize purse is doubling to $200,000 and the total 2012 Ironman World Championship prize purse is increasing to $650,000.

This season, the 5150 Triathlon Series will offer several new races and WTC has designated a number of Ironman 70.3 races around the world that will count toward the 5150 PR system as well. Professional athletes will have up to five of their highest scored races count toward their 5150 PR; at least one of those races must be a 5150 Triathlon Series event and up to two of the designated Ironman 70.3 races may count toward the total. A full list including the qualifying schedule and points can be found on the Ironman Pro Membership website at www.ironmanpromembership.com/hy-vee-5150-qualifying/.

Oak Island is a barrier island on the Atlantic coast in southeastern North Carolina, located about 30 miles south of Wilmington, NC and 65 miles north east of Myrtle Beach, SC. The inaugural race will take place on Saturday, June 2nd, 2012. With the opening of the New Oak Island Bridge in November of 2010 athletes will ride the length of the island and cross both bridges on this fast and scenic route! This event is open to everyone; from first time triathletes, relay teams, to veteran racers looking for a new challenge with breathtaking views.

This sprint triathlon will begin with a 1/3rd of a mile ocean swim in the warm 70 degree waters off Oak Island, North Carolina. After emerging from the salt water athletes will transition to their bikes for an 18 mile bike ride on a route that was never before possible. Just when you thought the double bridge crossing was the highlight of this event it's time to put on your running shoes. Triathletes head north on this 4 mile out and back run course that will take them to the end of the pier!

Swim: The swim course is rectangular shaped, with the swimmers traveling in a clockwise direction. Participants will start with their small swim wave (40-50 athletes) waste deep in the water. Keeping all the large orange buoys on right hand side you'll swim in a clockwise direction. Once the 1/3rd mile is completed you'll exit the water at the southern end of the course (left side on the map) and run 200m over soft sand/grass to the transition area. We'll have plenty of lifeguards and volunteers to keep you safe in the water. If for any reason you're not able to complete the swim we'll safely pull you back to the beach and you may continue racing under an "unofficial" status

The inaugural TriStar Kufstein triathlon will be held on July 15, featuring the succesful formats TriStar111 and TriStar55.5 at once. Located right at the border with Germany in the east of Tyrol, known as one of the most popular touristic regions in Austria, Kufstein appears to be the perfect destination to host an international triathlon. A picturesque and astonishing landscape for cycling, the ideal infrastructure for a triathlon race in city of Kufstein and a well developed triathlon scene in the region- all this makes TriStar Kufstein the perfect complementation with the recently announced triathlon race in Salzkammergut earlier in the season. The local, national and international triathlon community gets two new fun options for their triathlon experience.

TriStar Kufstein will make the athletes discover the region of Kufstein by bringing them to all the most beautiful spots of the area. The stunning 100km of cycling offer a varied bike leg with a demanding climb to Thiersee and some fast flat sections, always in the heart of a the highland scenery of the valley of Kufstein. The athletes are going to pass Kufstein city centre several times- with the TriStar111 participants doing two loops and the 55.5 athletes one- before reaching the second transition in the Kufstein Arena. The run leg will lead the athletes in loops on the city promenade along the river of Inn with a spectacular finish in the heart of the city at the "Unterer Stadtplatz" just at the foot of the famous fortress of Kufstein.
The app is an invaluable tool for developing swimmers and coaches with the use of high definition video clips narrated by Great Britain Olympic coach Dan Salcedo while other coaches Andrea Whitcombe and Thom Phillips demonstrate the drills and good swim techniques.

Novice swimmers should start with the stroke builder section which will lead them step-by-step to developing an efficient front crawl. Intermediate swimmers will benefit from the fault fixer and drills database to help them fix issues with their stroke and provide variety to their training sessions. Coaches can use all the sections as a demonstration tool to show correct technique to their swimmers.
