Be part of History again with Leon's Triathlon

After a 15 year hiatus, Leon's Triathlon is coming back. Back in the day, this was the world class event in North America to take part in.

Triathlon: Leon's Triathlon
When: Sunday, June 6, 2010 @ 8:00 AM
Where: Wolf Lake Park, Hammond, Indiana, USA
Divisions: Age Group, Relay
Website: www.leonstriathlon.com

"We plan to continue exactly where we left off, providing triathletes with an experience they won't soon forget!"

The original event that was known worldwide, featured in Triathlete magazine and was even televised on ESPN. The first Leon's Triathlons were held in Leon's hometown of Hobart IN. Leon and his family noticed that all of the major events focused on the pros and not the amateurs. They thought the amateurs needed to be showcased, so they pioneered the First National Amateur Championship, which to this day continues in the sport. They also hosted one of the first military championships in the sport.

Powered From Within: Stories About Running & Triathlon will motivate runners and triathletes of all levels. Stories include profiles of two-time Ironman world champion Craig Alexander and his preparations for Kona 2009; three-time Paralympian and runner Gerrard Gosens; Ron Stuart who became a steeplechase world champion in his 60s after injury and polio halted his ambitions as a young athlete; Kate Rowe who became an Ironman 70.3 world champion in her 50s after taking out a $25,000 loan to fulfill her dream; and Bernie Millett who at the age of 67 runs a 3:16 marathon.

Top running coaches Dave Scott-Thomas and Kevin Smith provide advice on marathon training. Age-group triathletes reveal their strategies to gain a mental advantage on race day while female triathletes discuss their approach to the sport.

CONTENTS
• CHAPTER 1 Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander 1
"It's not the winning or losing that keeps you awake; it's maximizing your potential and executing a great performance you know you're capable of."
• CHAPTER 2 Paralympian & Runner Gerrard Gosens 11
"I rode my bike to school by following the sound of my brother's bike in front of me … because my parents didn't put me in cotton wool."
• CHAPTER 3 Guide Runners 23
"I probably have only 3 or 4 guide runners I'd use in a race. Like with a motorcar you have your tires for racing and those for qualifying."
• CHAPTER 4 Women in Triathlon 33
"I was quite frightened that I wouldn't be good enough or fast enough. Then I began to realise a very small percentage of the field is fighting for the big prizes. Everyone else is like me."
• CHAPTER 5 Steeplechase World Champion Ron Stuart 45
"I used to beat Dave Stephens, the Flying Milko, until he went and stayed six months with Emil Zatopek."
• CHAPTER 6 Google the Competition 57
"These days most people have MySpace or Facebook pages with photos which enables me to get a mental picture of them."
• CHAPTER 7 Runner Brian McCarthy 69
"It is easy to convert someone to be a runner: they only need a pair of shoes."
• CHAPTER 8 Ironman 70.3 World Champion Kate Rowe 79
"When my boss said he'd give me the time and the bank said they'd give me the money, I decided to have another go at Kona."
• CHAPTER 9 Burley Griffin Bernie Millett 91
"You have to dedicate yourself to running. You don't get the time or the energy to do other sports."
• CHAPTER 10 Runner Karen Scott 103
"I feel that if I had listened to advice in the early stages of the running injury, it wouldn't have become as chronic as it did."
• CHAPTER 11 City to Surf legend Alan Farrell 115
"People didn't run with me. It was at least 10 years before I realised that you don't have to run flat out every time."
• CHAPTER 12 Marathoner Stephen Callahan 123
"It is a good effort to run a 10km or a half but a marathon is the ultimate. For the first one, I was out in the bush on my own running about 30km three times a week."
• CHAPTER 13 About Marathon Training 133
"The marathon is long enough that I don't think anybody can undertake it lightly."

Llanos, Dibens Win Inaugural Abu Dhabi Triathlon

Eneko Llanos of Spain and Julie Dibens from the UK made history in the United Arab Emirates as they clinched the inaugural Abu Dhabi International Triathlon. They endure the heat and the new bike focused course to win the top prize of $50,000 USD in today's triathlon.

Llanos came from behind to win the 223kms race in a time of 6:34:37, nearly a minute ahead of second placed Dirk Bockel from Luxemburg and a host of other world class favorites. Dibens dominated from start to finish clinching the victory on the Women's side. This was the longest race ever for Dibens who is the current Ironman 70.3 and XTERRA World Champion.

Local favorite Faris Al-Sultan of Team Abu Dhabi Triathlon put in the fastest time on the initial loop of the bike but a technical issue on the course saw him lose precious time, he finishes the day in sixth place.

Sam Gardner and Renata Bucher defended their XTERRA Saipan Championship titles on a hot and steamy day in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on Saturday.

It's the sixth straight Saipan victory for Bucher, and her 20th career XTERRA championship since winning her first one here back in 2005. Bucher had the fastest bike and run splits and crossed the line in 2:58:19, nearly nine minutes ahead of runner-up Shonny Vanlandingham.

Local pro and reigning XTERRA Japan Champ Mieko Carey finished third, followed by a pair of first-year pros from Great Britain - Emma Smith, the 2008 XTERRA World Champ in the 25-29 division, and Daz Parker, the reigning XTERRA amateur World Champion.

In the men's race Gardner caught and passed Mike Vine (who won the inaugural race here in Saipan in 2002) about halfway through the bike then held off the hard-charging Canadian on the run. His time of 2:34:03 was just 43 seconds better than Vine.

Jason Chalker (the 2003 Saipan Champ) came in third despite a hard crash on the bike that left a sizeable gash in his arm. Takahiro Ogasawara was fourth and finished in the top five here for the third straight year while Michael Hiscott placed fifth in just his first-ever XTERRA.

The race consisted of a 1.5-kilometer ocean swim, a 30k mountain bike that climbed 1,500 feet to the highest point on the island, and an epic 12k trail run that took participants through heavy jungle and into caves used during World War II.

Who'll be racing in the Abu Dhabi Triathlon?

Who's jumping ship this weekend to race in Abu Dhabi? Well, defending Ironman China champ Rasmus Henning will not defend his title this weekend as he seeks different title and a bigger pay day in Abu Dhabi. He did very well in his Ironman debut last year in the China heat and seems to be a leading contender for this weekend's race. On the women's side Tereza Macel (3rd) and Hillary Biscay (6th) will skip the heat in Haikou for the heat in Abu Dhabi and a chance at some prize money.

The new Abu Dhabi International Triathlon set to take place this weekend in the United Arab Emirates has attracted a lot of attention and some of the best professional triathletes from around the world. Triathlete magazine had labeled it one of the "Most Anticipated New Races of 2010". Its first-of-its-kind format and a $230,000 USD professional prize purse are some of the reasons. This new early season race in an exotic location features a longer bike course with a running leg shorter than typical Ironman events which allows for a quicker recovery. The race main race consist of a 3km Swim, 200km Bike and a 20km Run. The triathlon will also have a shorter distance event consiting of a 1.5km Swim, 100km Bike and a 10km Run.

Some of the contenders chasing this weekend's $50,000 first place prize are:

Brown & Lawn Rule Ironman New Zealand Again!

It was an amazing Ironman day in Taupo as the King & Queen of Ironman New Zealand do it AGAIN! Historic day as Cameron Brown wins his 9th Ironman New Zealand title. No one has ever won 9 titles at the same Ironman event (2009, 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001). It was just as eventful on the women's side as Joanna Lawn wins her 7th Ironman New Zealand title and sets a new course record. An amazing feat in itself but just short of historic (2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003) since Paula Newby-Fraser is an 8-time Ironman World Champion.

K-Swiss team member Terenzo Bozzone who was in the lead during the bike and took an early lead on the run finishes in second place for the second year in a row.

Lawn comes back strong after losing her title last year last year to Gina Ferguson who now goes by Crawford after her marriage. Crawford held strong in the late stages of the run against a charging Kim Loeffler to finish in second place today.

Being part of the 2010 Timex Multisport Team

The team is comprised of athletes from the U.S.A., Australia, India, Ukraine, Mexico, Czech Republic, Estonia, Canada and the United Kingdom. They serve as brand ambassadors for Timex and associated sponsors at hundreds of events around the world.

The 2010 team boasts such well known names as 2007 Ironman USA Champion Alex McDonald, Clearwater age group champion, Chris Thomas; USAT Collegiate Champion, Jessica Broderick and 2009 Ironman Florida Champion, Kiril Kotsegharov. But the true strength of the team is in its breadth of demographics. Ranging from ages 18 to 57, athletes from over a dozen countries and an excellent split of females and males, the diversity of the group is far reaching. One common reference point for each of the 50 athletes, however, is their passion for the sport of triathlon, and their willingness to share their spirit and enthusiasm for the sport.

The team recently gathered together at the Timex Performance Center (TPC) in East Rutherford, NJ for a camp. The TPC is the name of the facility brought forth by a unique partnership with the New York Giants in 2009. The facility enables both brands the opportunity to collaborate on training solutions for athletes of all levels that participate in various sports across the world.

"The fundamental A-plus of our relationship is how to train better, and bring new technology to the marketplace," said Timex President Adam Gurian.

The camp afforded each athlete the opportunity to glean in-depth knowledge about his or her key individual performance indicators, and collaborate with a team of medical and coaching experts on training plans for the 2010 season. The activities included biomechanical testing analysis, VO2 Max testing by Targetraining of Westport, CT, and MELT Method training, under the direction of a collaborative team of sports medicine and training experts led by New York Giants VP of Medical Services Ronnie Barnes and Polly de Mille of the Hospital for Special Surgery.

IronKids, which targets youth ranging from 6 to 15 years of age, aims to inspire and motivate youth through sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle. Participants compete in age-appropriate distances with an emphasis on fun and safety. Now in its second year, the youth triathlon series will return to the 2009 host communities while adding several new locations to its roster.

"WTC is committed to youth fitness in the U.S. and abroad and providing a unique platform that allows children to embrace physical activity,"said Ben Fertic, president and CEO of WTC. "IronKids is working to further develop the sport of triathlon while motivating families to improve their well being through exercise."

In addition to the race, the series offers an interactive weekend experience for the entire family. Each event will see the IronKids Expo, featuring product sampling, retail booths and activities as well as youth triathlon and nutrition clinics. The triathlon clinics, lead by USAT-certified coaches and designed to teach the basics of triathlon, will take place approximately two weeks prior to each race, with a second clinic being held the day before each event. COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- USA Triathlon and the top American multisport coaches and athletes have teamed up to create the first-ever training series presented officially by triathlon's national governing body - "USA Triathlon Training Series." Produced by Endurance Films, the dynamic and comprehensive five-DVD set covers every facet of one of the world's fastest growing sports with the hopes of taking all triathletes to the next level.

Filmed last summer in Colorado Springs and Boulder, Colo., each video in the series tackles a different aspect of triathlon - from getting started in the sport to specific tactics and techniques for swim, bike, run and strength training.

Guiding the viewer through the series is a hand-picked group of coaches and athletes who represent the best of American triathlon talent. This all-star cast of Olympic and national team coaches and athletes will help beginner triathletes excel in the sport.

These videos offer unprecedented, face-to-face instruction from the coaches that mentor top U.S. athletes on a daily basis, bringing the viewer the most current training information from the best in the business.

"Triathletes of all levels will benefit greatly from the same coaching tips and training techniques that help prepare our elite athletes for the world's most prestigious races," said USAT Sport Performance Director Scott Schnitzspahn. "For the first time, USAT has developed a training series that can help all athletes reach untapped potential in both training and racing."

Wilmington, N.C. -- Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon has been ranked fifth on a list of Best Distance Races in the World, according to the March issue of Triathlete magazine. The Wilmington, North Carolina race is one of two American races listed among the top 10, with the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii sitting at the top of the list.

"We are amazed and proud that after only two years our Beach2Battleship Triathlon has been ranked among the top in the World," said Dick Jones, executive director, YMCA. "It's a tribute to everyone involved in putting the event together - the Wilmington Family YMCA, the event committee, our 800 volunteers and of course, the athletes."

This year will mark the 3rd annual event, which takes place on November 13, 2010 starting in Wrightsville Beach and ending at the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial in Wilmington. Over 5,000 spectators are expected to attend the race, bringing a total $3 million to the Cape Fear region. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Wilmington Family YMCA.

Beach2Battleship, named among the top 100 triathlons in the world by Triathlete magazine in 2009, is one of 15 iron distance triathlons in the U.S. The Iron Distance Triathlon includes a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run, and offers a half triathlon course as well. Nearly 2,000 participants from over 40 states and a dozen nations compete in the event, which is produced by Set Up Events.
