Challenge Series to Debut New Austrian Race in 2010

Roth/Walchsee - The worldwide Challenge family is welcoming a new member. On September 5, 2010, the Kaufhaus Tyrol Challenge Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl will debut at the foot of the Kaisergebirge mountains in Austria. The beautiful Kaiserwinkl region, only a stone's throw from the German border, will be the location of the first Challenge triathlon in Austria--and it will provide a dreamlike backdrop for an extraordinary event over a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run.

The course with breathtaking views
The swim course will be in the Walchsee lake at the foot of the Kaisergebirge. The lake is 25 metres deep, has a temperature of 20 and 24 degrees Celsius and drinking-water quality. The bike course takes athletes through the picturesque Pillerseetal valley via Kössen to Hochfilzen, already well-known among athletes for its biathlons. The course takes the athletes down to St. Johann on a smooth road and through an interesting landscape, then to Schwendt before the return trip to the Walchsee lake. Altogether the athletes will have to deal with an altitude difference of 800 metres on the bike course. The three-lap run course along the lake promenade has some slight hills as it passes farms, fields and meadows around the lake while offering beautiful views of the Kaisergebirge and the Walchsee. The finish will be by the lake.

The eighth location of the Challenge series in the "Kaiserwinkl" region in Tyrol will add another attraction to the global series, which now includes races in Roth, Germany; Wanaka, New Zealand; Niederbronn-Les-Bains, France; Barcelona, Spain (two events); Kraichgau, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark (as of 2010).

Perfect location and date
But it's not just the course in the middle of beautiful mountain scenery that will guarantee a successful premiere of the Kaufhaus Tyrol Challenge Walchsee Kaiserwinkl. "I am very much looking forward to the race in Tyrol. Austria is an important market for us," said Felix Walchshöfer, organizer of the Challenge series. "The location is conveniently situated just across the German-Austrian border near the city of Kufstein, which will be a big advantage for German athletes. And the airports of Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck are only an hour's drive away. The date at the beginning of September has also been well chosen, since the new Challenge half-distance triathlon will certainly be a special highlight at the end of the European triathlon season."

Race organizers are glad to cooperate with the Walchsee community authorities because they are experienced in organizing big sports events. Mayor Andreas Mayr says: "The community of Walchsee can draw upon many years of experience in organizing sports events. In the last few decades we have held many big sports competitions in summer and in winter on a national and international basis. As the mayor of our community I can assure that the organizers of the triathlon have chosen their location well--not only because of our beautiful scenery."

Rev3 Full Iron Distance Triathlon Event Announced

Rev3 Full Distance Event takes place September 12, 2010; Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH

Revolution3 has officially announced that Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, OH will serve as the host venue for its newest event, a full iron distance triathlon in September, 2010. Taking place on September 12, 2010, the event will consist of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike and a 26.2-mile run. The inaugural full distance Rev3 will take place within the Cedar Point Park and will include access to the park for family members and friends. In addition, a professional prize purse of $150,000 will be offered as well as prizes for top age group finishers. Registration for the event is available at www.rev3tri.com beginning September 1, 2009.

“We are thrilled to be the host venue for Revolution3’s full distance race in 2010,” stated Bryan Edwards, sales promotion manager for Cedar Point. “Rev3’s goal is to provide their racers with the ultimate race experience and to hold their event at a venue that is fun for the entire family and there is possibly no place better to accomplish those goals than at Cedar Point.”

With 75 diverse rides, including 17 roller coasters; a huge outdoor water park (Soak City); four resort hotels; a luxury RV campground with cottages and cabins; two large marinas; outdoor entertainment complex featuring go-karts, miniature golf and more (Challenge Park); award-winning live shows; gift shops; delicious eateries; four giant kids’ areas and more, it’s easy to see why Cedar Point has been voted the “Best Amusement Park in the World” for an unmatched 11 years in a row!

The swim will be held on the beautiful Lake Erie, with athletes entering the water inside the park from the beach of Hotel Breakers, which serves as the host hotel for the Rev3 event and is located within 100 yards from the swim start. Following the swim, the scenic bike course will take athletes on a 112 mile ride through the country side of Erie County. The run will consist of a two loop course through downtown Sandusky on what is considered to be a generally flat run. The finish line will be positioned at Cedar Point and is sure to be one of the most spectacular finish line experiences around!

Sage Rountree Releases Book of Yoga Routines for Athletes

Boulder, CO, USA - June 15, 2009 - Nationally known endurance sports coach and yoga instructor Sage Rountree has published the first book of yoga routines for athletes. The Athlete's Pocket Guide to Yoga: 50 Routines for Flexibility, Balance, and Focus offers runners, triathletes, and cyclists a convenient way to gain the benefits of yoga.

When endurance athletes attend yoga classes, they bring tight muscles and even tighter schedules. At the height of the season, athletes often disappear from the yoga studio, yet it is then that yoga can be most beneficial. The Athlete's Pocket Guide to Yoga makes it easy for athletes to continue reaping the benefits of yoga all year.

The Athlete's Pocket Guide to Yoga offers 50 simple yoga routines athletes can use every day. The book includes quick warm-ups and cool-downs, 20-minute flexibility routines to relieve muscle tightness, longer strength sessions for the off-season and base periods, focus exercises to sharpen mental toughness, and restorative routines to speed recovery.

Even without any yoga experience, readers will find The Athlete's Pocket Guide to Yoga simple to use. Each page presents full color photos of athletes demonstrating the poses in a routine. Rountree groups routines by their goals so that readers can quickly address common problem areas like a tight lower back or hamstrings. The Athlete's Pocket Guide to Yoga is spiral bound so that it lies flat, making it easy to refer to the photographs while practicing.

Careful consideration of the athlete's needs has earned Sage Rountree a committed following, and her newest book delivers a practical approach to yoga that will make good athletes better.

TriStar200 Andalucía Kicks Off New Era in Triathlon History

Course designer Peter Reid: "True balance between three sports"

12 JUN 2009, Monte Carlo, Monaco/Andalucí a, Spain - TriStar200 Andalucí a is the brand new fun-focused triathlon event that kicks off a new era in triathlon history. On 12 September 2009, the inaugural triathlon over a total distance of 200km with a portion of eco-responsibility and benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation with each entry will throw new light on how triathlons can be organized.

Connecting the two provinces Cádiz and Huelva under the Andalusian sun, and benefiting from the strong support of Andalusia's Government, the race will start with a drafting cycle race in a peloton. After 169 competitive kilometers in the meandering Cádiz region, the participants will traverse the Guadalquivir river delta where it meets the Atlantic in a 1km swim. Exiting the water, athletes will face a 30km run on the endless sandy beaches of the Doñana national park, which will be part of a sports event for the first time ever in history. Finishing on the popular summer resort Matalascañas, athletes will experience a new dimension of triathlon. Registration with a special offer for the first 300 entries opened today on www.tristar200andalucia.cc.

"TriStar has created a new and exciting race format for the sport of triathlon with a focus on participation", says Peter Reid, multiple Ironman World Champion. "I strongly believe the new format is a true balance between the three sports. The sport of triathlon is growing so fast yet new ideas are slow to keep up. TriStar has caught up to the demands and will become the leader in triathlon events. Furthermore, TriStar has assembled a crew that has a winning record in providing safe events."

TriStar200 Andalucía stands for a total distance of 200km of endurance sport focusing on eco-responsibility, sustainability and fun. The unique experience of running through the beautiful Doñana national park as a participant of this high quality sports event is a premiere in history. The tagline "Doñana Challenge" sums it all up in two words: sandy beaches, the Atlantic ocean, dunes, roasting sun, strong head winds -- you never know what kind of challenges you'll have to face, but a Challenge it will be.

TriStar200 Andalucía will start in Cádiz on 12 September at 7h00 in the morning. In a pre-start heat athletes will cycle along the city walls from the Plaza de España before lining up at the Plaza de La Constitución to start the drafting race. Biking through Cádiz, San Fernando, Chiclana, Medina-Sidonia, San José del Valle, Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Rota and Chipiona, they will arrive in Sanlúcar de Barrameda for the transition to the swim. After crossing the Guadalquivir river in currents of fresh water and saltwater, the run in the Doñana national park might be the most challenging segment of the race. Physically -- and mentally -- the run between the Dunes and the Atlantic Ocean demands strong will to get to the Finishline.

New Ironman 70.3 Branson Race is a Possibility

It seems likely that we will see at least 2 new Ironman 70.3 triathlon races in 2010 in North America, one in Missouri and the other one in Colorado. The Ironman 70.3 Series currently consists of 33 half iron distance triathlon events around the world, see 2009 Ironman Race Schedule. An Ironman 70.3 event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run.

According to the Branson Daily News comes this:

"Last week, Ross Summers, president and CEO of the Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, and Ryan Robinson, of Ironman, visited with Branson aldermen about the possibility of an Ironman event in Branson. Summers told the board he needs $75,000 from the Tourism Tax Contingency Fund to help bring the race to town." According to the story, the new Ironman 70.3 Branson race would take place in September 2010 if race organizers can allocate some money from the local tourism fund to bring the race to town.

A new Ironman 70.3 Series race could also pop up in Colorado in 2010 based on the unofficial news that the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) has bought 5430 Sports who runs the highly successful Boulder Triathlon Series. The series is comprised of the 5430 Sprint Triathlon, the Boulder Peak Triathlon, and the 5430 Long Course Triathlon. If it's true then most likely the 5430 Long Course Triathlon event would be re-branded as an Ironman 70.3 triathlon event. Stay tuned for additional details...

(Westlake Village , CA ) June 8, 2009 - Iconic footwear and sportswear brand K•Swiss is proud to congratulate professional athletes Matt “Boom Boom” Reed, Joe Gambles and Tim O’Donnell on their respective first, second and third place finishes at this weekend’s inaugural Revolution 3 Triathlon (Rev3) held in Middlebury, CT.

The first-ever Rev3 consisted of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and13.1-mile run that most competitors agreed was one of the more challenging courses they had ever taken on. Power and speed proved to be the winning ticket in the men’s field, which was dominated by Reed throughout every stage.

Reed exited the water in 21:58, and proceeded to build a considerable two-minute lead on the rolling bike course with a time of 2:15:49. He then used his large frame to his advantage on the run course where he clocked a time of 1:19. All told, Reed finished in 3:59:25 – the only sub four-hour time of the day. Fellow K·Swiss athletes finished just minutes later, Gambles in 4:01:00 and O’Donnell in 4:03:34.

Buffalo Triathlon Results with Terenzo Bozzone

On Sunday I was hanging out at the Buffalo Triathlon, cheering and taking pictures at the event. It was a chilly day for all as the race day temp at the start of the race was hovering around the 48 to 50 degrees mark. Athletes were happy to hear that the water temperature was at least 20 degrees warmer than the outside temperature. Warmer expectations were smashed once athletes headed out on the bike as wind and drizzle made it feel even colder that it really was. In all, athletes made the best of it to cross the finish line, including Terenzo Bozzone who was the special guest. I managed to snag a picture with him after the race.

"The race on Sunday was a good challenge. I really struggled to find my rhythm throughout, as my body didn’t like the icy weather. It was about 45’F/ 6’C, which is a typical winter day back home in New Zealand. But now I feel soft complaining because I heard that the Nordic skiing team here trains and races in -30’F in the winter—crazy! The pace was on from the start of the swim. I managed to get away and keep a small lead for the rest of the race to hold on for the win, but 2nd place was under 2 minutes back and 3rd close behind." - Terrezo [via blog.fastertomorrow.com]

Walking around the event area, it was cool to see and hear people talking about Terenzo. Of course some of the comments from the women were "he's hot!" while the comments from the guys were "sweet bike" or "even his aero bar water bottle is aero dynamic". I smiled when I heard an older gentleman mention to another that he was really surprised to her that Terenzo flew in from New Zealand to race. I didn't spoil the small town buzz and excitement by telling them that he lives in California right now. Terenzo is definitely a friendly world class athlete as he stopped and talked with people that stopped him or just wanted to get a picture with him.

It seems that once Terenzo cleaned up and warmed up he had time to enjoy the rest of his stay with a movie according to his Twitter post "The Hangover movie....an absolute must see, didnt stop laughing!" @Terenzo on twitter.com

Winter Triathlon Nationals Heading to Utah in 2010

June 5, 2009 - Though multisport athletes are in the heart of their summer racing season, it’s never too early to start thinking about cooling things down with a little winter competition.

USA Triathlon is pleased to announce that its 2010 Winter Triathlon National Championship will be held January 16, 2010 at Soldier Hollow Resort in Midway, Utah, as part of the Battle@Soldier Hollow BASH Winter Triathlon.

Winter triathlon consists of running, mountain biking and cross country skiing, offering a great way for athletes to compete outside of the typical triathlon season while improving base fitness and expanding skills in multisport.

Whether you are a seasoned winter triathlete or new to the sport the BASH Winter Tri has something for you. BASH Winter Tri 2010 will feature a new mix of trails combining beginner and intermediate terrain for a challenging all around course.

“We are excited USA Triathlon has chosen us to host this national championship event,” said Rob Leishman of Wasatch Area Race Productions, who will be conducting the race. “We believe that the new course layout will be well suited to separate the best from the rest, while being a fun and entertaining venue for the novice and intermediate athletes.”

Soldier Hollow is nestled in the shadow of the Wasatch Mountains and was home to the cross country ski events of the 2002 Winter Games. Athletes of world-class ability as well as weekend recreationalists use this beautiful facility year round. With world class groomed ski trails and the region's longest tubing runs, there is something at Soldier Hollow for the whole family.

Find out more about the event at the BASH Winter Triathlon website. The website also features photos and a race video free for download.

San Diego, CA - June 5th, 2009 - The Competitor Group (CGI), has announced that it has signed a joint venture agreement called Competitor Media UK to establish a European edition of Triathlete Magazine. Triathlete Europe will launch this summer in conjunction with the London Triathlon with distribution in the UK, Ireland and Holland.

"Triathlete Magazine has always been in great demand in Europe," said Publisher John Duke. "Shipping costs have always made widespread distribution cost-prohibitive. The launch issue of Triathlete Europe will be on sale July 24th, 2009 and the magazine will then be produced as a monthly publication, with national distribution handled through Comag.

Jim Peskett will head up Competitor Media UK Ltd. Peskett brings with him 20 years of experience and knowledge in specialist sports media, having launched, amongst other titles, The Surfer's Path, Whitelines Snowboard Magazine and Sidewalk Skateboard Magazine.

"Triathlon has now become one of the 'must do' sports," said Peskett.
Ironman Canada Interactive Real Course Video Released

Ironman Canada is still a few months away and just in time comes a new training DVD for the scenic and challenging bike course. RacerMate has just released its 9th CompuTrainer Interactive Real Course Video with the release of its training DVD for the Ironman Canada bike course.

RacerMate filmed in high definition video a number of Ironman courses on race day. The new CompuTrainer Interactive Real Course Videos will allow you to see and experience the bike portion of the race while riding indoors. These videos are sure set to take training and race preparation to an entirely new level.

Previous releases include the Ironman World Championship course and Ironman videos for Coeur d'Alene, Arizona, Lake Placid, Louisville and Australia. In the works are bike training videos for Ironman Wisconsin and Ironman Florida.

Prices for the videos in the new series will be: $99.95 each or $79.95 (each for 2 or more per order)

Just a few weeks ago, RaceMate went out and filmed the bike course for the new Ironman St. George race set to take place next May in Utah, so expect that to be released in the near future.

Inaugural Revolution3 Triathlon Preview

The inaugural Revolution3 Triathlon (Half-Rev) takes place this weekend (June 7, 2009) in Middlebury, Connecticut at the Quassy Amusement Park. The inaugural triathlon will feature the largest professional purse prize of any regular season half iron distance event of its kind, $100,000, coupled with $20,000 in cash and prizes for our age-group athletes. Besides that, the Revolution3 Triathlon is focused on offering a fun, first class race experience for athletes and spectators. The triathlon race will consist of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.

The large professional prize purse has attracted some of the biggest names in the sport of triathlon in both the men's and women's professional field, currently around 52 athletes. The most notable professional that will be in attendance but won't be racing will be 5 x Ironman Champion Heather Gollnick who just returned from Florianopolis, Brazil with a 3rd place finish at Ironman Brazil. By the end of the day Gollnick will probably feel just as worn out as she does when she races because she and her husband will be busy putting on the race. Some of the professionals that will be shooting for the $16,000 1st place money are listed below. You can see the full list of confirmed professionals and see their bio's here.

The race has attracted a lot of buzz in the half iron distance event arena, going up against the popular Ironman 70.3 series races. No other race besides the World Championship race in Clearwater and possibly this years Ironman 70.3 New Orleans have you see a profession field like this. The prize money alone on both the pro and amateur side blows the 70.3 races out of the water. You can read about the scenic and challenging bike and run courses here.

In its first year, the race has attracted the likes of Slowtwitch.com and Insidetri.com, both who will be providing live coverage of the race via the internet. Spectators on-site will be able to follow the race via six cameras strategically placed throughout the course with a live broadcast feed.

Triathica Invites You to "Train Like a Triathlete"

New training center officially opens its doors to the public

It was a landmark occasion for multisport athletes in Orange County on May 31st as Triathica, a one-of-a-kind "triathlon training center," opened its doors to the public in a Grand Opening celebration. The event was highlighted by special guest speaker and Olympian Julie Swail Ertel, a pro triathlete and Irvine resident, who talked about her experience at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Her inspirational tale was just one of many exciting events that took place at Triathica, located off Bake Parkway in Lake Forest.

Guests were treated to giveaways, catered lunch, an expo with shopping booths, guest speakers, as well as the Triathica team giving a first-hand look at everything the training center offers. "I wanted everyone to get a real taste of what we do here and see how we have the tools and resources to lead people into success in triathlon whether it's their first or 50th race," said Triathica president Ron Saetermoe. Such services include in-depth bike fitting, video analysis tools, coaching, training plan development and more.

Triathica staff got their hearts pumping to demonstrate the state-of-the-art-equipment filling the facility. Saetermoe jumped in the Endless Pool to swim, while another Triathica staff member pedaled away on the CompuTrainer on a ride that simulated the Orange County Triathlon bike course. Guests, too, had the opportunity to workout on the equipment, which also includes a full set of CycleOps indoor spin bikes with power meters, Landice L9 treadmills, strength-training equipment and more.

"It may be an individual endeavor to do a triathlon, but we're all in this sport together--we can train together and it can be fun, it's' not intimidating. Bring your bike by or your running shoes and let's get to work," said Facility Director, Jarrett Pflieger.
