National Training Center Named USA Triathlon Certified Performance Center

The National Training Center (NTC) met a number of rigorous requirements set forth by USA Triathlon in order to earn the designation of one of the top multisport facilities in the nation. The center is one of only 10 certified performance or training centers in the country.

In the 1990's, the community hospital, South Lake Hospital, was preparing to build a new hospital in Clermont. Hospital administration, along with physicians and USA Triathlon, had a vision to create a true health, education and wellness campus that would not only serve the medical needs of the residents, but provide sports, health and fitness to the community and beyond.

Opened by South Lake Hospital in 2001, the 37,000 square foot fitness facility features a 75-meter by 25-yard outdoor pool, athletic fields, and a 400-meter track and field complex and cross country course. The NTC also offers outpatient physical therapy, video analysis, bike fits, V02 and lactate testing, and a newly extended performance lab with motion and gait analysis.

<a href="http://hitstriathlonseries.com/ target="_blank">HITS Triathlon Series set roots in Colorado this weekend with two days of racing at Highline Lake State Park in Grand Junction and saw some iconic athletes cross the line. Tim Hola, 39, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado powered to a 4:17:13 Half-distance victory with 43-year-old Heather Gollnick of Steamboat Springs, Colorado leading the women in 4:54:28.

Born into the sport in the 1980s, Hola has raced the World Championships in Hawaii 13 times. "It's not something that a lot of people can say they have accomplished, so to be lucky enough and healthy enough to do that is my proudest accomplishment," he said. "I can only hope that I can stay driven enough in my head to want to continue racing year after year."

Triathlon is still a family affair for Hola - his wife Nicole raced the HITS Olympic alongside his father Ken, now 70 years old. According to his two six-year-old boys, they will be triathletes too someday.

"I love this model," said Hola of HITS' "a distance for everyone"™ approach to the sport of triathlon. "It affords so many people the opportunity to be triathletes."

Gomez and Pedersen Win 2013 Challenge Half Barcelona

In his first middle distance competition, Javier Gómez Noya (ESP) spectacularly won both the Half Distance Triathlon European Championship and Challenge Half Barcelona this Sunday. Camilla Pedersen (DEN) took the women's title for the second year in a row.

Gomez dominated the competition throughout, scoring his dream debut in Calella. "I only have one word: spectacular. In the beginning, I tried to manage my effort in the very demanding cycling segment, but when I saw myself getting comfortable and securing enough margin, I decided to enjoy the run course and its public. I am very happy with my result, the atmosphere and the great organization of this Challenge competition."
Jens Toft was the first to complete the 1.9km swim course, followed only three seconds later by Javier Gómez Noya and by Russian Yaroshenko in third position.

After the T1 start, the Dane led the first kilometers of the bike segment. The Spaniard started in second position at 13 seconds. Yaroshenko and Italian Alberto Casadei came next. In the downhill part, Gómez Noya launched an attack and managed to overcome the Dane and get in first position.

After that, the Spaniard continuously increased his advantage, making the final 21km run look easy. He finished with a six-minute advantage on the runner-up, Martin Jensen, and eight minutes ahead of bronze medalist Jens Toft.

Four-times world champion Chris McCormack, finished sixth. "I travelled a long way looking for a challenge, and I found it. It was a hard race, a very good training at the beginning of the season. Furthermore, I have been able to enjoy it alongside Javier Gómez Noya, an incredible person with whom I can find no fault; he is extremely talented and very classy. I would feel privileged if he would succeed me in this distance; it has been a real pleasure to compete with him in a town like Calella and with the spectacular organization provided by Challenge."

The weekend is nestled at the magnificent Shawnee Inn, a historic lodge established in the early 1900′s. The Shawnee Inn is entirely for Rev3 athletes and families, and T2, expo, and finish line are all on the grounds of Shawnee Inn.

Triathlon: REV3 Pocono Mountains
When: September 12-14, 2014
Where: Shawnee on Deleware, PA
Events: HalfRev, OlympicRev, Sprint Adventure Race, Glow 5K
Website: www.rev3tri.com

"We are thrilled to expand our race series and add REV3 Pocono Mountains," said Charlie Patten, Revolution 3 President and Founder. "This is a beautiful area at this time of the year, and will truly celebrate the fall season and outdoor multisport on the East Coast."

The weekend will include multiple events including a Friday evening Rev3 Glow 5K, a USARA sanctioned sprint adventure race and a family adventure race on Saturday. Sunday's highlights are an Olympic distance triathlon as well as a Half REV. The Half REV offers a professional race with a $50,000 prize purse.

Sunday's races feature a lake swim, then a point to point bike where the athletes plunge 400 vertical feet over the first 4 miles of the bike into the scenic Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area where the scenery this time of year will be the only distraction as the balance of the bike course will be closed to traffic. The run is a hilly out and back course passing Shawnee Mtn. Ski Area and back into the National Recreation Area before coming back to finish at the Shawnee Inn Resort.

MAY 14, 2013 - The successful launch of Challenge Family with three events into Australia continues with Challenge Melbourne selling out today with over 1200 competitors.

"I couldn't be happier with the response from athletes and industry people to the announcement of Challenge Melbourne," said David Hansen, Challenge Melbourne director. "The emails and phone calls of encouragement have been overwhelming and to now sell out the event in less than a week of opening entries is humbling."

Challenge Family CEO, Felix Walchshöfer, is also thrilled with the huge response from athletes. "Athletes have been asking us for nearly two years to come back to Australia and today it seems as though they have greeted Challenge Family's return in the best way possible with so many signing up, not just for Melbourne but for all three races. I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to each and every athlete for your support and I very much look forward to welcoming you across the finish line!"

The inaugural Challenge Melbourne event will take place on February 2, 2014.

Last week the Challenge Family announced their re-entry into the Australian triathlon scene with Challenge Melbourne, Challenge Forster and Challenge Bateman's Bay.

Up for grabs is the triathlon suit she wore last October, when she won her first ever Ironman World Championship title in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. See the eBay item description below. Hurry, as the eBay auction ends on May 19, 2013 15:00:59 PDT .

Auction Item Description
This is THE tri-suit that I wore when I won the 2012 Ironman World Championships in Kona.........it has been washed by the way!

I will be donating all the money from the sale of this tri-suit to my charity of choice: the Blazeman Foundation for ALS. I have been supporting this charity since 2007 and every year I do something in a bid to raise money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. This year the multi-sport community lost a dear friend to many, Pete Zucker. I was fortunate to meet Pete and get to know a little of the impact his battle with this disease had on his family and friends. This one is for you Pete.

PLEASE be generous and PLEASE tell all your friends. Below is a little more about ALS and for further information about the Blazeman Foundation for ALS, please visit their website.

ALS is a progressive degenerative disease that attacks the motor neurons, or nerve cells, in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons control the movement of voluntary muscles. Death of the motor neurons makes it impossible for the brain to control muscles or signal them to move. As the muscles atrophy, it results in weakness and loss of coordination.

Jorgensen Wins Again, Brownlee Gets His First in Yokohama

She managed to hold off Emma Moffatt and Jodie Stimpson on the run for her second ITU win of 2013. One the men's side, Great Britain's Jonathan Brownlee, who didn't think he would be racing at all this season due to an injury, showed everyone that he's back. The reigning ITU World Champion lead from start to finish to win the ITU World Triathlon Yokohama race, his first win of 2013.

Highlights of the 2013 World Triathlon Yokohama - Elite Women

If San Diego hinted at it, Yokohama has well and truly confirmed the USA's Gwen Jorgensen as the leading contender in 2013, as she took back to back ITU World Triathlon Series titles and the overall series lead in Japan on Saturday.

Conditions played a huge part with constant rain and cooler temperatures making for a treacherous race at times, with numerous crashes on the bike. But it was Jorgensen who reigned supreme, first running down Emma Moffatt (AUS) and Jodie Stimpson (GBR) and then simply flying off into the distance to win by 14 seconds in a time of 1 hour 57 minutes and 5 seconds.

Jorgensen initially stayed back after the first lap of the run, but pulled out another negative split 10km to pull back in the difference in the final lap and said it played out to her race plan.

"I wouldn't say it was a repeat of San Diego, there were different conditions out there today, a choppy swim and the rain on the bike, but it was an exciting race for sure," Jorgensen said. "I just started the run and to be honest I was a little worried those girls really took it out fast and I just tried to focus on my race. I just tried to maintain pace the whole way."

The win puts Jorgensen on top of the 20132 ITU World Triathlon series rankings, with three races now completed in the season. Germany's Anne Haug still sits in second, with Moffatt in third.

Challenge Melbourne, Challenge Forster and Challenge Bateman's Bay will spearhead the Challenge Family's return to Australia. All three Challenge Half distance events will comprise a 1.9km swim, a 90km cycle and a 21.1km run together with a prize purse of over AUD$30,000.

Challenge Family CEO, Felix Walchshöfer, said the return to the Australian market is a significant milestone for the Challenge Family.

"Australia is an extremely important part of the world for us, we have received messages from athletes every day asking us when we will be back and I'm delighted to announce our return with three very different, but all equally compelling races," he said. "Challenge Forster continues our commitment to the legacy of our sport with its strong roots in Australian triathlon, Challenge Bateman's Bay has been chosen for its great location and athlete experience while Challenge Melbourne brings the Challenge Family to one of Australia's iconic cities. We are very proud to work with all the communities and race organisers to bring a new triathlon experience to Australian athletes."

Walchshöfer's sentiments were echoed by four times world champion, Chris McCormack. "Challenge Family is all about bringing triathlon back to its roots, where you meet the people behind the event, where you're welcomed across the finish line by them and where you are truly made to feel that you share the same passion. I'm beyond excited that Challenge is back in Australia and can't wait to be part of Challenge Family on my home turf."

A team of seasoned triathlon industry professionals have come-together to re-launch Challenge Family in Australia, including renowned race-directors David Hansen (SuperSprint) and Mark Emerton (Elite Energy). Hansen will oversee the Challenge Melbourne event, while Emerton will deliver the Challenge Forster and Challenge Batemans Bay events in collaboration with Challenge Family.

THE MEN
Dye exited the river swim with a slim lead over Kyle Leto and Eric Limkemann. Chris Foster and Conrad Stoltz were over 2 minutes behind Dye when they hit land.
Cameron Dye quickly took command of the race putting over a minute on the competition in the first 8 miles of the bike.

"The conditions were tough today," Dye said. "When you have cool temps, rain and wet roads there is always a bit of caution. I worked the uphills extra hard so I could take the downhills with a bit of caution. I am pleased with today and how the legs held up. The bike handled well and happy to grab the win here."

The run was the swapping ground for the remaining places with Foster running into second and Kaleb Vanort moving through the field into 3rd. Limkermann held on for 4th, after coming off the bike second. Conrad Stoltz, known for his Xterra legacy, exited T2 in third but was quickly eaten up on the run course by the fleet feet of the runners.

McMahon, Kessler Win Ironman 70.3 U.S. Pro Championships

Once again St. George, Utah greeted triathletes from around the world, but this time for the inaugural Ironman 70.3 St. George triathlon.

In nearly perfect weather condition Canadian Brent McMahon and American Meredith Kessler win the 2013 Ironman 70.3 U.S. Pro Championship designated race. For their part, they share part of the $75,000 prize purse that was on the line. The event which was converted over from the full distance Ironman St. George triathlon last year attracted many top pros for the prize purse as well as the KPR point's on the line. Over 2,000 triathletes took part in the inaugural triathlon event.

On the men's side, first out of the water was Andy Potts, followed by the Vasiliev brothers Ivan and Denis from Russian on the 1.2-mile swim. Showing off some ITU skill was Ivan Vasiliev who beat Potts or of T1.

It was Potts and the Vasiliev brothers who shared the lead early on the bike. The lead was narrowed to about 45 seconds some 35 miles into the race with Greg Bennett and Tj Tollakson making up some time with others just over a minute behind. Tollakson caught up with the leaders and came into T2 with them with just a slight lead on the rest of the men.

Again a fast transition helped Ivan lead the men out on to the run, including Brent McMahon, Kevin Collington and others. The lead didn't last long as McMahon made up the deficit early into to the run and took the lead sometime after mile 3. His overall 1:13:20 run split helped him stay out while the other jockeyed for position. Collington managed to move past Potts and the brothers for 2nd while Potts managed to do the same with a slightly faster run to snag 3rd. Ivan Rana had the fastest run split of the day, going 1:12:41 for the 13.1 mile run.

McNeice, Granger Claim Inaugural Wins at Challenge Taiwan

New Zealand's Dylan McNeice has again made his mark on the international triathlon circuit as he took his second major title in only his second long distance race at this weekend's Challenge Taiwan. Meanwhile Belinda Granger (AUS) won the women's race, claiming her 15th long distance victory in the process.

His two from two win proved that his victory at January's Challenge Wanaka was no fluke as once he again he led from start to finish. The 27-year-old asserted himself early on, leading a competitive field by over three minutes out of the swim in 47:00 and never relinquishing his lead, taking the title in 8:16:21.

McNiece's closest rival out of the water was Todd Skipworth (AUS), an Olympic rower-turned-triathlete and also a rookie in the professional long course ranks. Skipworth leapfrogged between second and third place throughout the bike course with Georg Potrebitsch (GER), eventually reaching T2 just ahead of the German with the fastest bike split of the day in 4:28:40. Within a few kilometers on the run Potrebistch managed to pull ahead and maintained his position to the finish line taking second in 8:27:06. Skipworth would ultimately drop back to fifth, passed by both Fredrik Croneborg (SWE) and Petr Vabrousek (CZE) who crossed the line in third and fourth respectively. But while Vabrousek's finish marked an historic 125th long course race for the Czech athlete, Croneborg's performance was equally remarkable. The smiling Swede was a swift yet silent achiever, working his way steadily through the men's field and capping his stellar day with a race best run split of 2:52:33. Also of note in the men's race was Guy Crawford (NZL) who, despite a debilitating mechanical issue on the bike fought hard to hold onto sixth place.

Typically humble, McNiece was disbelieving of his win. "I was running and I was at the front and I thought, 'Geez I've been at the front all day again today. This is just what people are going to always expect of me!' It really is a hard way to race. It's a good way to race because you're always in control and it's your own race and your own pace, but today and in Wanaka both I suffered the last 10k. I was stopping and walking, I started cramping and my stomach was a mess."

"It's just like after Wanaka," he continued. "I still don't even know that I won. It takes a long time to settle in. At the moment I'm just happy to have finished, just happy it's done. But in the next few weeks it will settle in and be a great feeling."

Two first-time winners were crowned champions of the 30th Anniversary St. Anthony's Triathlon on Sunday. Jan Frodeno and Alicia Kaye crossed the finish line on their way to topping one of the largest and best pro fields in the race's history.

Frodeno, 32, is no stranger to winning, having come in sixth place in the 2012 London Olympics and winning a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. "I was nervous about coming here, especially when it came to the run because that's not my strong card," Frodeno of Germany said. "The other guys kept the pressure on."

Keeping Frodeno on his toes was Ivan Vasiliev of Russia, who came in second place, and Hunter Kemper of Colorado Springs, Colo., who placed third.

Kaye, 30, said that she felt strong throughout the day, but the women also kept the pressure on and she never had a huge lead. "The gap did not change much throughout the race," Kaye of Clermont, Fla., said. "I can't describe how it feels; it's so emotional to win this race."

Following Kaye were Nicky Samuels of New Zealand in second and Emma Moffatt of Australia in third, who was running her first St. Anthony's Triathlon and her first 5150.
