Middaugh, McQuaid Win XTERRA Canada Championship

xterracanadachamplogo.jpgJosiah Middaugh and Melanie McQuaid win the men's and women's pro titles at the 2010 XTERRA Canada Championship in Whistler, B.C.

There was a definite chill in the air as the sun tried to come out from behind the clouds at Alta Lake for the 9am start of the XTERRA Canada Championship. The swim was two laps of 750-meters with a short sprint in between, and was led by young stud Jordan Bryden with Christine "Big Fish" Jeffrey only seconds behind. Hot on their heels was three-time world champ Conrad Stoltz and U.S pro Branden Rakita. Canada's first XTERRA Champion, Mike Vine was a minute back with fellow Canadian Karsten Madsen, and another 30-seconds behind was Colorado's Josiah Middaugh. Three-time world champ, Melanie McQuaid, exited the swim 3 minutes behind Jeffrey and new mom Danelle Kabush over 5 minutes back from the leader.

Then came what everyone had been waiting for - 19km over two laps of what may arguably be XTERRA's toughest bike course followed by 11km of up and down trail running, with a little pavement providing welcome relief from the roots, rocks, slipping and sliding.

It was here that the battle for XTERRA Canada champion came down to a contest between Mike Vine and Colorado's Josiah Middaugh. The two pulled almost identical bike splits with Josiah taking fastest bike by only one tenth of a second.

"I like going uphill and the technical stuff was OK" said Middaugh, "but Mike Vine was awesome - he was whaling that stuff - it was crazy. I was trying to keep it close, but he would put 40 seconds on me on the descent. He started the run about 40-seconds up and I got him on the top of the first climb. He stayed pretty close. He could always see me, so it wasn't over - I had to keep working."

Middaugh took the win with a margin of 35-seconds over Vine to finish in 2:09:30. It's his first win this season, and his second XTERRA Canada Championship title (he picked up his first-ever championship win in Canada back in 2004). "It feels good to have a win", said Middaugh, "I've been close all year and I needed this... when you're on you're on, I felt good all day."

Vine took second in 2:10:22 in Whistler, his "stomping ground" and his favorite place anywhere to ride. "I didn't know what to expect as I haven't been racing these guys all year. I raced in Saipan (in March), but none of the U.S. guys were there, and since then I started my new career working full time at a physical job. It takes the pressure off racing - I'm doing it for the enjoyment. I came out to have a good time today and it felt good to go full throttle and let it rip. Josiah had a really good ride - for him to come up here and ride these trails that well is impressive - I was definitely better prepared."

"This is a true XTERRA - technical and not just powering along. I felt good and was flying on the run".

Stoltz took a wrong turn on the run and while finding his way back was passed by Colorado's Cody Waite and Idaho's Adam Wirth who took fourth and fifth respectively in 2:20:41 and 2:23:31. It was Wirth's first XTERRA pro podium appearance. Stoltz took sixth in 2:24:12.

Marceau, Robin Win Inaugural TriStar111 Monaco

TriStar11 Monaco Olivier MarceauIt was a hot day of racing in Monaco for the inaugural running of the TriStar111 Monaco triathlon. Olivier Marceau of Switzerland and Christel Robin of France conquered the condition and course to win the inaugural TriStar111 Monaco titles. The best relay team of the day was the Livestrong Team No. 2 with Gregory Mallet, Geoffroy Lequatre and Marcel Zamora.

Over 660 triathletes took part in the new triathlon race with the unique TriStar distances of 1km of swim, 100km bike and 10km of run for a total of 111km. The new triathlon replaces the previously run Ironman 70.3 Monaco race that was held in the Principality for several years.

At 8.00 AM athletes entered the clam sea at Larvotto beach. It was Olivier Marceau who came out of the water first, namely in 12:10 minutes - only four seconds ahead of Hervé Banti from Monaco. Behind him, Chris McCormack (AUS) and Romain Cadiere (FRA) were the first to follow him to the transition area. Christel Robin was the first of the female professionals to touch solid ground (14:41), leaving Sara Tavecchio (ITA) and Charlotte Loaring (CAN) behind her.

The bike course from the Larvotto area - right 2km through the Principality of Monaco in the direction of Roquebrune Cap-Martin, then to the hinterland, is a very demanding one. Climbs alternated with very technical downhills. Olivier Marceau was leading on the bike for the whole race and raised the gap to the next competitors on 2 minutes and 29 seconds. The second athlete in the Transition area 2 was Mikel Elgezabel. In 3rd place: Regis Maniora (LUX), 6:16 minutes down. On the women's side Christel Robin made a souverain race. She enlarged her advantage up to unbelievable 17 minutes and 18 seconds.

The Mirabeau curve, the Rascasse and the Tunnel Louis II are the key areas of the Formula 1 Grand Prix track in Monaco. On the 2 loops run the triathletes had the opportunity to experience how steep the climbs and the descents are on the track. Olivier Marceau kept his lead throughout the whole course and finished in an amazing race first (3:44:51). The chasers Mikel Elgezabal and Regis Maniora crossed the finish line 2 minutes and 47 seconds and 9 minutes and 5 seconds later.

On the women's side Christel Robin crossed the finish line first in 4:07:40 leaving Coralie Lemaire (4:30:26) and Annika Seeg from Germany (4:40:02) behind her.

World Tri Update, Charlie in Poland, Needs your Support

theworldtrimap.jpgCharlie Wittmack, the Des Moines, Iowa man who is 8 weeks into the unprecedented 11 month triathlon called The World Tri has has made it to Poland. It was just last month when Charlie successfully completed the first leg of The World Tri by swimming across the English Channel from England to France.

Since then he has successfully biked across most of Europe (France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland). Unfortunately success come with and price and Charlie and his team has run in to a snag, lack of funding.

"We have some news to share regarding the future of the expedition. Unfortunately, due to insufficient funding for the expedition, we have had to make some difficult decisions over the past two weeks. For the expedition to continue, we have decided it is necessary for Charlie to continue the bike leg solo and unsupported."

Wittmack has run out of money and sponsors to pay the rest of his team, which includes videographers and other team members putting this expedition together to use as educational and healthcare initiatives for organizations around the world.

Wittmack says he's determined to finish The World Tri on his own, even if his wife, son, parents and other team members return home. They have been along his side since this adventure began.

"Brian and Andy have done an incredible job and we are grateful for their contribution to the expedition. Leg one would not have been a success without their hard work. They have now left the expedition from Prague to rejoin their families and pursue other opportunities. Cate and James are also returning home. Cate will continue to work toward the educational goals of The Adventure Institute and support the upcoming Global Health project in Nepal."

Call him crazy, call him stupid, but don't forget to call one heck of a determined guy! Charlie will carry the torch of The World Tri and share his experience as he continues to bicycles across Europe and Asia. You can continue to follow his journey here: www.theworldtri.com/archives/category/blog

Wittmack could use your help! If you would like to make a donation to The World Tri expedition, The Adventure Institute, or the Global Health Project in Nepal please send your donation to Rebecca Moomey, Bankers Trust, 453 7th Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50309 and indicate which portion of the project you would like your donation to go towards.

The annual Laguna Phuket Triathlon on Sunday, November 28, 2010 will kick-off a calendar of sporting and social activities leading up to the Ironman 70.3 event a week later on Sunday, December 5, 2010. The fitness fiesta is set to reaffirm Laguna Phuket's stature as a venue of world-class sporting activities and magnet for international tourism.

Triathlon: Laguna Phuket Triathlon

"As Thailand recovers from the effects of political turmoil earlier this year, events such as this are crucial to rebuilding tourist confidence," said Laguna Phuket Triathlon event director Debbie Dionysius.

"Close to 1,000 international entrants are expected for each event and global attention will be focused on Phuket. This will be a sporting and tourism showcase of the best that Thailand has to offer the world," she said.

Training sessions, entertainment and social events are planned to provide all entrants with opportunities to mix with the professionals.

IronmanLIVE.com Suffers Major Outage on Race Day

ironmanlivescreen.jpgThe World Triathlon Corporation's website for Live Coverage of this past weekend's Ironman races suffered a major outage that left remote spectators tracking their loved ones or friends in the dark. IronmanLIVE.com was scheduled to have simultaneous live race coverage from Ironman Louisville and Ironman Canada. Remote / Online spectators would be able to see live updates, have access to the athlete tracker and at times see live video coverage.

UPDATE:
Both sites were the target of a cyberattack designed to deny users access to the website, which made it difficult for fans to follow the progress of participants at Ford Ironman Louisville and Subaru Ironman Canada. Ironman.com Faced Cyberattack
The website received a much needed upgraded / facelift earlier this year. The live race coverage went from a small fixed size window to a full-fledged website which provided additional space for race coverage, advertising and an upgraded video delivery method.

All was working well in the morning for the start of Ironman Louisville with coverage from Greg Welch and Chris McDonald. During the live coverage, they showed some pre-race video coverage from Lisa Bentley who was up in Penticton, Canada covering Ironman Canada. It appeared that the main video coverage was going to focus on Louisville, since the note below the Ironman Canada video said that video coverage would begin at 11 am local race time. All was going well during the initial hours of the live race coverage.

imcvideofeed.jpgSome 6 hours into the Ironman Canada race video coverage was showing some TV show from a Canadian TV station. Race updates still showed.

At some point in the late afternoon the site became unreliable and slow. People were unable to access IronmanLIVE.com or Ironman.com The stream of twitter messages started flowing, wondering if there was an issue and reporting their disgust. People around the world became frustrated not being able to track an athlete. RaceHQ reported that the site was reporting a denial-of-service attack, but we have been unable to verify that.

Ambrose, Keat Claim Titles at Ironman Louisville

imlou.jpgSunday, Aug. 29, 2010 (Louisville, Ky.) -- Great Britain's Paul Ambrose celebrated his first Ironman win, while Australia's Rebekah Keat captured her second, at today's fourth-annual Ford Ironman Louisville Triathlon. Ambrose, who has seen podium finishes at Ironman 70.3 Cancun and Ironman 70.3 California, took the title more than 11 minutes ahead of the second male, Martin Jensen (DNK). His winning time was 8:29:59. Keat, the 2007 Ironman Australia winner, crossed the finish line with more than an 11-minute lead over second-place finisher, Kim Loeffler (USA). Keat's official time was 9:33:15.

Exiting the water in third, Ambrose was more than three minutes behind John Flanagan and among Ironman Champions Jason Shortis (AUS) and Max Longree (GER), who won the event in 2008. Ambrose took the lead early in the bike and maintained it throughout the rest of the race, posting the fastest bike split of the day (4:31:36) and claiming his first title.

Keat exited the water in fifth place behind defending champion, Nina Kraft (GER), Maki Nishiuchi (JPN) and Americans Hillary Biscay and Bree Wee. In a similar fashion to Ambrose, Keat pulled ahead in the early portion of the bike, posted the day's fastest bike split (5:08:26) and won with a substantial lead on the second-place finisher.

Mexicana Shutdown Could Affect Ironman Cozumel Athletes

imcozumeltravelwarning.jpgAthletes traveling to Mexico for Ironman Cozumel could be affected by breaking airline news. Triathletes registered for the Sold Out Ironman Cozumel race set to take place November 28, 2010 should check their flight plans immediately. The reason is today Grupo Mexicana announced that it suspended operations at its three airlines "until further notice," citing the terrible financial problems it inherited when the group changed owners a week ago. The company's three airlines Mexicana Airlines, MexicanaClick and MexicanaLink are all affected.

Mexico City, August 27, 2010 - Nuevo Grupo Aeronáutico, S.A. de C.V. ("Grupo Mexicana") announced this morning that as a result of the group's delicate financial situation when it changed owners a week ago, compounded by failure to reach agreements that would allow for the capitalization of its three airlines, Mexicana Airlines, MexicanaClick and MexicanaLink flights will suspend operations until further notice as of midday (12:00 p.m.) on Saturday, August 28, 2010.

Today's decision is a painful one for the 8,000-strong Grupo Mexicana family, but we will continue seeking out ways of securing the company's long-term financial viability, so our passengers can once again enjoy the quality services they are accustomed to. We hope to be back in the air soon and would like to thank everyone involved in this process for their support and understanding.
