HITS Triathlon Series will make its New York State debut in Hunter Mountain, New York June 9-10 and offer local and national triathletes alike a glimpse at what the northeast has to offer.

HITS Triathlon Series released a set of finalized maps this week for all five distances of the Hunter Mountain event. They feature swims in the pristine waters of North/South Lake, which sits within the boundaries of a spacious state park. The Sprint and Olympic distance bike and run courses experience the hills of New York State while still welcoming triathletes of varying levels. The bike and run courses for the Half and Full distance races boast dynamic routes, which include a 15 mile rolling warm-up, plenty of seated climbs and a sweeping decent into the village of Phoenicia.

Course maps for HITS Hunter Mountain are available online and can be viewed <a href="http://hitstriathlonseries.com/hunter-mountain-ny-2012/hunter-mountain-ny-2012-maps" target"_blank">here.

"I have been an avid Triathlete and cyclist for more than 40 years and have had many opportunities to travel the roadways that makeup the HITS race taking place at Hunter Mountain," said Greg Seeley, Greene County Sheriff. "They are some of the most competitive and challenging roadways with the most beautiful views that you will ever experience anywhere in the Country."
As an incentive to register early, all athletes who complete their registration by May 15 will receive a free parking pass for the entire weekend.

In an effort to encourage New York City triathletes to experience the swimming, biking and running potential of upstate New York, HITS has developed a ride and race package. The ride and race package offers transportation from New York City to the race site courtesy of Trailways, bike transport and free shuttle service between the race site and various lodging partner locations. For more information on the ride and race package, please e-mail info@HitsTriathlonSeries.com.

"Hunter Mountain is a hometown race for us and we can't wait to show it off to a dynamic group of athletes," said Mark H. Wilson, race director for HITS Triathlon Series. "Our goal is to offer quality, affordable races to triathletes from New York City, the northeast and beyond."

When Hunter Mountain is a wrap, HITS Triathlon Series will be back on the road traveling to Colorado for an event in Fort Collins July 28-29, followed by stops in Cooperstown, New York September 22-23 and Lake Havasu City, Arizona November 10-11. All upcoming events will present qualifying opportunities across all distances for the HITS Athlete of the Year Awards, which will be announced at the HITS Championship in Palms Springs, California December 1-2.

The weekend will also feature a HITS Fitness Festival, which will serve as the gathering place for participants and spectators to interact with local and national sponsors, fitness products, services, as well as event partners.
Three of triathlon's Big Four, two key contributors and a top age-grouper were formally inducted into the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame on Thursday at the Bahia Resort Hotel.

A sold-out crowd of nearly 300 friends, family members and multisport dignitaries gathered to honor pre-2000 elite triathletes Mark Allen, Scott Molina, and Scott Tinley; contributors Bob Babbitt and Sally Edwards; and age-grouper Ethel Autorino.

Plenty of the sport's biggest names were in attendance, including Dave Scott, the first member of the Big Four inducted into the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame, and two-time Ironman World Champion Chris McCormack. Even Lance Armstrong, who had planned to attend the event, delivered a video message for the inductees. "Truth is, a triathlete won the Tour de France seven times," Armstrong said.

"It was an amazing night," said Chuck Graziano, chair of the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame Committee. "This was an incredible experience watching all six of the inductees tell stories that take everyone in the room back and show that these inductees have really shaped where the sport is today."

Sally Edwards
Sally Edwards, who has founded six fitness-related businesses, written 23 books, set a Master's Ironman world record and finished last in every Danskin triathlon so that another woman does not have to, talked about doing your best in all aspects of life.

"I volunteer to finish last, and I went from first to worst. In the USAT rankings, I am the worst triathlete in America," Edwards said. "It's the best place to be, because leading from the back is where we should be leading."

Ethel Autorino
Autorino stands as one of the most decorated age-groupers in U.S. multisport history. She is a 10-time age-group winner at the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship and went on to capture six gold medals and one silver as a member of Team USA at the ITU World Championships.

"I've led an absolutely charmed life," Autorino said. "After winning races and finding out that I really enjoyed it, triathlons got more sophisticated. They even added bike racks."

Bob Babbitt
Babbitt has helped push the sport of triathlon to new heights through a myriad of contributions over the past 25 years. His work in the world of multisport media began when he co-founded Competitor Magazine in 1987 and helped launch Competitor Radio in 1990.

Babbitt spoke of his first Ironman and the nutrition his crew provided during the race, including a Big Mac, fries and a Coke. "I thought this would take me two days. I had no idea I could do it in one day," Babbitt said. "So I thought, 'there's going to be a band. There's going to be all sorts of people cheering for us at the finish. This is a pretty impactful event.' Instead there's chalk on the road and a light bulb. I hear this voice: 'hey you, you in the race? You're done.'"
{Picture of USA Triathlon Hall of Fame Trophy}

Mark Allen
Allen is recognized as one of triathlon's all-time greats, having captured six Ironman World Championship titles between 1989-95.

"This award for me is not so much honoring the accomplishments during my racing career, but the sum of all of [the Big Four's] accomplishments together," Allen said. "If we were all in a race together, there was about a 99 percent chance that one of us would be the champion. And when one of us won, it was a win for all of us."

Scott Molina
Molina stands as one of the most decorated triathletes in the history of the sport. Among his 104 professional triathlon victories are six USA Triathlon Elite National Championships -- including four straight from 1983-86 -- the 1988 Ironman World Championship and a pair of World's Toughest Triathlon titles.

A tearful Molina acknowledged those who had an impact in his career plus his fellow athletes in the Big Four. "To Dave Scott, who set the standard, to Mark Allen, who I chased, to ST [Tinley], who I probably spent a good 10-15,000 hours training with, this wouldn't be worth anything to me if I wasn't being inducted with you guys."

Scott Tinley
With nearly 100 career multisport victories, Scott Tinley ranks as one of the winningest triathletes of all time. After discovering the sport as a student at San Diego State in 1976, Tinley became a two-time Ironman World Championship winner, topping the podium in 1982 and 1985.

Tinley spoke about the first winner of the inaugural modern triathlon, Dr. Bill Phillips, whom he once asked, 'why triathlons?' Phillips told him it's something hard, but it's meaningful. Do what you can. "I never forgot that," Tinley said.

For full bios on all of the inductees, visit the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame page at www.usatriathlon.org/HOF2011

The USA Triathlon Hall of Fame was founded in 2008, and this year's class brings the total number of inductees to 19.

As part of this effort, the organization has been renamed Triathlon Business International.

"When we first launched Triathlon America less than two years ago, we believed that US-based businesses serving the triathlon market were underserved and would benefit from their own industry association," said Jack Caress. "But triathlon is a global industry, and if we are truly committed to growing the sport and business of triathlon, it is essential that we expand our membership globally and facilitate opportunities to help our members grow their businesses internationally."

In the past year, Triathlon Business International has rolled out a number of resources and programs including a discount program for members, a certified retailer program and a comprehensive study conducted with Active Network of men and women participating in the sport of triathlon. Additionally, Triathlon Business International held its second annual industry conference and signed an agreement with the country's largest cycling show Interbike to create a 10,000 square foot space dedicated to triathlon.

As part of the launch of Triathlon Business International, the organization will explore additional opportunities to benefit members at trade shows and other events around the world. Additionally, Triathlon Business International will expand its board to include members based outside the U.S.
Formula 1 drivers, such as Lucas di Grassi, Jenson Button, Bruno Senna or Alex Wurz have adopted some of these events as part of their trainings. Big names of the triathlon world, like the Brazilian Fernanda Keller, Chris McCormack, Olivier Marceau, Lothar Leder and many others are TriStar ambassadors and are taking part in many races.

TriStar is based on three core concepts: Fun, Environmental Protection and Social Responsibility. These events promote a fun and fit atmosphere without the apprehension of intense competition. Designed for amateur athletes and supported and co-developed by professional triathletes, the TriStar Series is making triathlon more accessible than ever.

TriStar Rio de Janeiro (a full weekend of sports and activities) is organized by Star Events South America, and is the result of a partnership between two agencies, ONE International Sport Business and Star Events. Brazilian racing driver Lucas Di Grassi is leading the local organization team of TriStar Rio de Janeiro.

Four-time Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington shares her life story with American fans in her soon to be released biography A Life Without Limits: A World Champion's Journey published by Hachette Book Group. Her story is not that of your typical Olympic-class athlete. She didn't live for sports growing up. Rather, sports were an outlet for life for Chrissie. And somehow along the way she discovered that sports could propel her life's ambitions and passions farther than she ever imagined.

Ask any average American triathlete the backstory on Wellington, and you will get a remarkably strange tale. Here's the most common version: "Oh, yeah, she mountain biked around Nepal, entered a triathlon and has never lost since." This book finally adds the layers of richness to the story that one would expect for a person who would eventually rewrite possibilities for women in the sport.

Chrissie did not dominate sports in school. She swam, she biked, and she ran, but never all in the same day. She did clearly excel in the pool. In high school, she rose to the top ranks of her local swim team. She even attracted enough notice to be recruited to one of the elite programs. However, joining the group meant leaving her friends on the team. In typical Chrissie fashion, she opted to hang with her mates and leave the elite competition for others.

Passion drove most of her other important choices. She really wanted to make a difference for people living in poverty around the world. After graduating from college, she first worked for a small charity before landing a plum job at the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra). She quickly worked her way up the NGO ladder and found herself organizing a major conference on world development and leading negotiations with the Nigerian government. Heady stuff for a young woman just starting out in a promising career.

However, road races, long open water swims, and bike treks continued to beckon her time and passion. And probably most importantly, she began recording surprisingly strong performances for a woman who would just casually enter some very tough endurance events. Strong finishes in local half-marathons started to hint at the promise endurance racing held in store for her. Still, her most memorable athletic events seemed never to involve a timing clock - like completing a 2,000 mile bike ride with friends across Nepal.

The pivotal moment seems to be the Salford Triathlon. At that race, she qualified for the ITU Age Group World Championships in Lausanne. The pride and joy she felt in representing her country leaps from the page. Her performance at the event ultimately convinced her that she could turn professional. Through a web of connections, she ultimately put her professional fate in the hands of fabled (and controversial) triathlon coach Brett Sutton.

Her memoir offers a vivid picture of one of the most successful programs in forging talented athletes into world class competitors. The reader can feel the heat and humidity of Subic Bay as Chrissie and a group of household triathlete names do brutal workouts about as far from the glamorous race locations as they could find.

The book includes some great training advice for burgeoning triathletes. She includes an entire section on how she regularly trained for the long distance events. More importantly, though, the reader walks away with a sense of the passion required to be just that good at anything.

Chrissie may have stepped away from serious racing, but I will bet we'll hear a lot more from her on different topics in the coming years.

The hardcover book A Life Without Limits: A World Champion's Journey from Hachette Book Group is due out in the US on May 15th. In just 5 short years, Izzo has built one of the largest 70.3 distance races in the country held on the shores of the Hudson River in Croton-on-Hudson. Rich isn't about to rest on his laurels, though, as we learned. This year, he created a closed bike course that adds a completely new dimension to the race.

Paul: Looking back on 2011, what was the biggest improvement to the race?

Rich: I would say that every aspect of our race has improved over the last 4 years. But one of the things we are so proud of is our army of volunteers. In 2008, we had 50 volunteers whereas in 2011 there were 800 volunteers. We are on target for 1100 this year. This is a virtual army of people out there to cheer for the athletes.
We added more infrastructure for the 2011 race, from a VIP tent, spectator stands and 15 foot wind wing flags that lined the last mile of the race to an information center. Also our logistics team is up there with the best in the business having several key people that have been in the race organization business for over 30 yrs.

Paul: How many people participated?

Rich: Last year we had 1100 athletes register which made the race a sellout for the third consecutive year and mind you that was with increasing the amount of racers by 400 from the year before. For 2012 we expect a sellout again with an additional 300 racers.

Paul: Did the community appreciate the support for the 911 remembrances and memorial?

Rich: Our team debated if it was appropriate to have Toughman on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. After giving it much thought and with lots of input from the first responders who come out and race, we came to the conclusion that having the race on this date made it more special with the message being "We will persevere". This was the theme of the prayer done by Rev Anthony Stephens...who races every year.

Plus the race raised over $270,000 for 50 charities with the 9/11 Memorial at Croton Landing made from a piece of steel from the World Trade Center receiving a portion of every entry. This year we will be doubling the amount of charity money raised. We will also directly contribute funds to the 9/11 Memorial as well as the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption through the Toughkid's triathlon series Championship on Sept 8th. Our race allows racers as well as volunteers to fundraise for whatever charity they choose through the Toughman Community Fund.

Paul: What are your goals this year?

Rich: Our goals for 2012 are threefold: first and foremost to give the age groupers a safe, great race experience. In that regard we have a CLOSED BIKE COURSE for 5 hrs. This is unprecedented in half iron circles. In fact we are one of the ONLY half iron race in the U.S. that will have this feature. This will enable all racers - especially first timers - to race hard without worrying about car traffic. Plus the new bike course will be faster with only 4 left turns and a lot less climbing. This will reduce climbing by 50% from the older course.

Next our goals are to grow an additional 20% which has been our annual growth rate since inception while at the same time giving the racers a big race feel.

Lastly, it is to get the public more involved in viewing the race. With this in mind, we will be doubling the amount of shuttles on race day with a dedicated shuttle that will take spectators into the town area during the event. As an added feature of our half trail run, we will be detouring the beginning of the run course through the Historic Van Cortlandt Manor trails so that runners can experience more of the natural beauty of Westchester.

Paul: Tell us more about the bike course?

Rich: This year's bike course will be closed to traffic with a scenic view of the Hudson River for more than 28 miles. This is safer, more scenic and will be much faster than in years past. With the dramatic growth of Toughman over the last 4 years it was necessary to make this change in order to make sure that racers were safe and to accommodate our present and future growth. This way racers will ride directly onto and off of the new bike course with no interactions with any cars. Our primary focus is first and always the safety of our age group athletes.

Paul: What will happen to the average bike speed on the course?

Rich: It will be much faster than last year as the amount of climbing will drop from 3800 to 1900 feet. Plus it is only 4 left hand turns.

Paul: How should people train differently this year? Fewer hills, more intervals?

Rich: We have a training clinic on Aug 18th that will take you on the old bike course. If you can ride that, the new one will be a piece of cake.

Paul: Do you have any other surprises in store for us this year?

Rich: First, expect all the same things that have made our race the "MUST DO NY Half Iron" the last 4 years: the 35 foot sailboat at the swim turn around, the 18 aid stations on the run, a volunteer crew that includes: cheerleaders, angels, cross country running groups, community groups, marching band, bagpipers, and "The Devil and Superman", a post race BBQ with chicken, beans, corn on the cob, post race massage by 50 therapists and over $25,000 worth of age group awards.

We have several other new additions this year that will add depth to our team as well. This allows us to give the racers a "big race feel" at an event that is only 30 minutes from NYC, NJ, CT, LI being the largest half iron within 3hrs of NYC.

But one thing you can bank on is that we have many new "surprises" for you racers on the run!

Paul: Thanks for your time, Rich. We're sure this year will be an even bigger success than last year.

Also New for 2012: TOUGHTEEN Triathlon!
The inaugural TOUGHTEEN Triathlon will take place in Croton Point Park Sunday September 9, 2012 as part of the Toughman Triathlon weekend festival. It features a Swim: 300 yards • Bike: 6 miles • Run: 2.5 miles

Under wet conditions on the island of St. Croix, Andy Potts and Angela Naeth get the victories at the 2012 Ironman 70.3 St. Croix triathlon. Both Potts and Naeth win their second Ironman 70.3 title of the year, while Naeth also sets a new course record.

Last minute entry Lance Armstrong, who's was looking for his first win since coming back into the sport and valuable points toward qualifying for Kona earned the third sport on the podium today.

Potts pretty much arrived under the radar before the start of the race, arriving on Friday on the island. Potts led the men's field out of the swim with France's Stephane Poulat on his tail. Armstrong was nearly a minute thirty behind out of the swim. On the slick roads Poulat bike his way to the lead with Potts, Armstrong and others closing in on him. Coming up to around mile 45, Armstrong closed the gap and passed Poulat for the lead. Armstrong reached T2 first and had built up a minute forty five lead over Poulat and Potts before heading out for the 13.1 mile run.

Potts patiently cut the gap on Armstrong who pushed hard and hung tough, holding onto about a minute lead on Potts at the end of the first loop. Potts made his move early into the second loop, reaching Armstrong and passing him around mile 8. Poulat did all he could do to catch Potts and Armstrong but only managed to pass Armstrong to take control of second while out on the run. Potts finishes the day with a 1:12:50 half marathon and the win. Poulat holds onto second place, while Armstrong gets third.

Defending champ Maxim Kriat was back but just didn't have what he needed to be in contention for the win or the podium, he finishes in seventh.

Canadians Sara Gross and Angela Naeth exited the water in third and fourth and found themselves spotting 2:45 to the lead pair.

It was Naeth who showed her usual dominance on the bike as she raced into the lead. Ellis managed to keep leader within 2:00 for the last half of the race, however, that was as close as Ellis would get to the front today. Neath, despite riding a flat tire for last 6-miles of the bike, managed to hold a 1:58 lead as the pair entered the transition.

On the run, Naeth extended her lead to 3:58 at the completion of the first loop of the two loop run. Naeth put her run on cruise control for the closing half, and won her second Ironman 70.3 race of the season with a 5:23 winning margin over Ellis. Even with a flat tire for the last 6-miles, Naeth manages to set a new course record, beating the one previously held by Julie Dibens. Naeth finishes the day in 4:28:12, a minute faster that the old mark of 4:29:11. Gross put together a solid run that thrust the Ironman specialist into third place.

Fast runs propelled Greg Bennett and Kelly Williamson to victory in today's OlympicREV event.

Cameron Dye initiated the chase on the men's side, exiting the water first with Kyle Leto and Brian Fleischmann right behind him. Out on the bike, Dye maintained his lead on the 40km bike course, he was being pushed by Andrew Yoder, who had to make up precious time from the swim. Yoder finishes the day with fastest bike split of the day; he averaged 26.75 MPH on the bike and entered T2 right behind Dye. Bennett was third into T2, about 1:10 down on Dye. Dye maintained the lead on the run, but Bennett was in hot pursuit and cut the lead down to 15 seconds by mile 4 on the 10km run. Bennett, who is 40 and who can run, passes Dye for the lead and the eventual victory, edging out Dye by forty second. The same thing happened to Dye last year when Matty Reed passed him on the run for the win. Yoder hangs on for third.

The pro women started a minute behind the men but it was Sara McLarty who was exiting the swim with the last of the pro men and well ahead of the other women. Like in the men's race, McLarty was out in front in the women's race, initially 50 seconds ahead of Williamson, Becky Lavelle, Malaika Homo and Lauren Goss. The gap narrowed as they approached T2, but it was McLarty who still maintained a 35 second lead. Homo and Lavelle right behind her into T2 with Williamson about a minute down. McLarty was caught and faded against the fast women runners. Williamson gradually narrowed the gap, eventually taking the lead and extended it by well over a minute for the win.

Notable DNF's included Bree Wee who unfortunately called it a day after the swim.

The other Ironman event that also took place this weekend was the 2012 running of Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie, New South Wales. With commanding leads, Australian's Paul Ambrose and Michelle Mitchell win their first Ironman Australian titles.

It was the perfect day for Ambrose who led from start to finish over the 140.6 mile course, beating out fellow and hometown hero Tim Berkel.

On the women's side Hillary Biscay, who's husband Maik Twelsiek was racing Ironmna St. George, led the women's out of the swim, with a small lead. Biscay maintained her lead on the bike course but Nicole Ward and Michelle Mitchell eventually caught her. The trio the stayed together out on the bike course but it was Biscay who led the women into T2 with a 15 second lead. Biscay eventually lost the lead to Ward and Mitchell out on the run. Ward and Mitchell stayed together but it was Mitchell who slowly pulled away from Ward on the second lap and never looked back, eventually running 12 minutes faster than Ward to claim the victory. Ward hung on for 2nd, with Biscay rounding out the top three.

After three years of declining participant numbers, the event next year will be converted to and Ironman 70.3 distance event.

It was kind of fitting, much in line with it's characteristic of being probably the hardest Ironman race in the series, that this year race proved to even be a tougher challenge than normal, even with the much easier run course that was put in place this year. The swim which is normally chilly, was cold but the winds made the 2.4 mile very challenging and down right scary for some as the swells made it quite a challenge. Heath Thurston, the pro from Utah started things off being the first one out of the swim in 51:18, followed by Maik Twelsiek and Hoffman.

The wind continued to gust and made conditions on the bike course even more challenging for Hoffman and Twelsiek who went back and forth on the bike out in front. The wind was so strong out between Gunlock & Veyo that Hoffman was blown off the road and had to unclip and remount his bike. Twelsiek who finished in 2nd place last year, had a lead on Hoffman some 90 miles into the bike, but Hoffman made up the difference and arrived first into T2, with Twelsiek right behind him. Last year Twelsiek, who is strong on the bike, rode a 4:36 and today he only was able to manage a 5:10 split, almost 35 minute slower. Hoffman on the run gradually extended his lead on Twelsiek and wins the Ironman St. George title in 9:07:04, he wins his 2nd career Ironman title. Twelsiek again finished in second place.

After the race Hoffman was quoted saying "that was hands down the hardest thing I've ever done".

On the women's side, Kessler led the women out of the swim with a five minute advantage over the next pro women Jessica Smith. Kessler was doing the race for the third time, her best finish was in the inaugural year, 2010, when she finished in 2nd place. Last year she DNF'd while on the run. Her previous rides on the course helped her dominate the day on the bike course, even under the windy conditions. He bike splits in comparison for all three years 2010: 05:37:48, 2011: 05:22:03, 2012: 05:57:14. She entered T2 with a commanding 20 minute lead. With nobody close to her, she coasts to a 3:18:23 and finally wins her first and last Ironman St. George title. Jesse Donavan took second, while Uli Bromme came in third.

Notable DNF's for the day inclide Chris McDonald who decided to call it a day at the hot corner while running in 4th place.

The inaugural Ironman 70.3 National Harbor race which was set to take place only 3 months from now on August 5, 2012, has been cancelled by WSEM, the race organizer.

"Dear Ironman 70.3 National Harbor Athlete,

The inaugural Ironman 70.3 National Harbor Triathlon has been cancelled. Athletes registered for the event will receive a full refund of their entry and processing fees.

Refunds will be issued within 30 days and will be credited to the card used for registration through the Active Network."

UPDATE:

The Ironman 70.3 National Harbor Triathlon was cancelled because not enough athletes were registered for the event.

Ironman asked us to stay silent, not post anything on social media and not send out any press releases so that the damage to Ironman's brand would be minimized. We were fools to agree and that was a big big mistake on our part.

We should have communicated immediately and told you the reason from the start. We were definitely wrong not to do so and apologize. The six figure financial loss from the event was more than we could manage.

This is the second triathlon event in Washington DC Metropolitan Area to be cancelled by WSEM this year, the other race which also has ties to the WTC was the Washington DC Triathlon, which was a race in the 5150 Triathlon Series. The event cancellation was related to the National Park Service denying a permit for the race.

These two highly visible triathlon event misfortunes have taken place since the Competitor Group annouced a multi-year partnership with Washington Sports & Event Management back in February.

With the goal of not only supporting the sport of triathlon but also helping promising young, local athletes develop into world class triathlon professionals, Alaska Milk Corporation has become the title sponsor of Team Bike Boutique which shall be named Alaska teamTBB Philippines. It's an extension of the original team in Singapore.

Alaska teamTBB is composed of 10 members of four foreign professionals and six promising Filipino athletes. The pros include Caroline Steffen, David Dellow, Ali Fitch and Mathieu O'Halloran.

"We are very pleased to have top foreign athletes like Caroline Steffen, Ali Fitch, Matt O'Halloran and David Dellow," said Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, President and CEO of Alaska Milk Corporation. Obviously, having a top caliber coach in Brett Sutton helps make this goal a real possibility."

He recently won the 3rd edition of the prestigious Abu Dhabi International Triathlon - an emphatic win where he ran down Faris Al-Sultan on the 20 km run (3:18/km pace!) to take a great win. Not long ago Henning released a book "PRO Chasing the Dream" and now it's available in English as an E-book on Amazon. Book website: www.prochasingthedream.com

"When I arrived in Hawaii in September, I was more than confident that I could win the Ford Ironman World Championship - or at the very least, a spot on the podium. - I couldn't help but feel the pressure to deliver a top performance - a lot of people saw me as a medal contender. My 2009 debut in Hawaii certainly piqued many experts' interest, placing 5th - with a broken hand, no less."

The book follows professional triathlete Rasmus Henning life for a full year in his attempts to win the biggest race in triathlon - the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.

They follow him while training, in competition and balancing a family life.

After 8 years of Olympic Distance racing with numerous big results to his name, he switched back to iron distance racing in 2009 and immediately became a success. He won Ironman China in April 2009 with a 30 minute margin and qualified for Ironman Hawaii. In August the same year he became European Long Distance Champion and thus became the second male to have won both short and long course European Championships.

After a perfect build up to Ironman Hawaii, Rasmus crashed on his bike 17 days before the race and broke his right hand. He decided to be at the start line anyway despite the broken hand and managed a fifth place finish in his debut in Kona.

He went on to Ironman Hawaii in October as one of the main favorites, only to experience a devastating day of embarrassing mistakes, major misfortunes and huge disappointment - and ended up in 23rd place.

A picture of Rasmus Henning crossing the finish line at the 2009 Ironman World Championship

In 2011 Rasmus struggled with severe cramps in several races during the season. He came into Ironman Hawaii in good shape but only managed to finish 14th on a day where the body didn't co-operate as it should.

His goal for 2012 is the same as always: To become Ironman World Champion in Hawaii this October.

Some 80 pros were on hand for the 29th running of the St. Antony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Florida which included a $65,000 prize purse and points for the 5150 U.S Championship in Des Moines, IA.

New this year was a new swim start location to help combat the rough swims the event has experienced over the last years. The event had sunny skies and warm temps at the start of the race.

On the men's side, Joshua Amberger was the first to emerge from the 1.5km Swim with Cameron Dye close behind. Amberger, Dye, plus Ben Collins stayed out in front on the 40km Bike, entering T2 together. Collins had the overall fastest bike split of the day, a 53:09. Heading out of T2 Ospaly was nearly down two minutes on the lead group with Timothy O'Donnell about a minute and a half back, both in hot pursuit. Ospaly and O'Donnell chased down the leaders on the 10km Run and erased the gap. Ospaly had a slightly faster run than O'Donnell and enough to stay ahead of Collins for the victory. Collins holds on for second with O'Donnell taking 3rd and Amberger taking 4th.

Quoting Greg Bennett's day in St. Petersburg via Twitter "My day with race #13 , skin suit zip stuck = loose 30secs, bottle pops out = loose bottle + 1+min penalty, hit squirrel = dead squirrel!"

On the women's side, Sara McLarty showed she's still fast in the swim, exiting the water first with a 19:10 swim. Defending champ Haskins was right behind her, only 3 seconds back. Alicia Kaye exited T1 nearly 1:30 down on the lead women but made up the difference with her fast bike split of the day, 0:58:44. Angela Naeth was the other woman to go sub 1 hour on the bike with a 0:58:44 split, but her four minute difference on the swim still had her two minutes down exiting T2. As in the men's race, it came down to the fastest runner towards the front and that was Haskins who was two minutes faster that Kaye. Haskins ends up crossing the line with a commanding lead for her fourth consecutive St. Anthony's Triathlon title. Kaye hangs on for second and Jodie Stimpson grabs third. Kelly Williamson had the fastest women's run split with a 34:26 but was farther back in the field due to a slower bike split compared to the lead women.

Dan Hedgecock of Minneapolis won the Men's' Elite race 1:53:15while Linda Robb of Florida won the women's division in a time of 2:09:38

Notable DNF's for the day include Bevan Docherty and Rebeccah Wassner.
The winners of this 'movie triathlon' in one of the most important European Cinema capital were two French 'actors': Romain Guillaume and Delphine Pelletier, the great protagonist of the day. The swim start was cancelled by the marshals because of high waves for security reasons. So triathletes started the race from the swim exit.

Romain Guillaume takes the win in the first TriStar111 Cannes (3:31:03) in a very challenging bike course. Daniel Fontan, one of the best Italian long distance athletes placed second (3:33:32). Swiss Olivier Marceau, winner of three TriStar races (Monaco, Mallorca and Nevis) fighted hard trying to overtake Fontana, but the Italian pushed hard on the run and keeped the second position. Guillaume, second in TriStar Lyon 2011, showed a big smile after this important day. "It was my first victory ever as a profesional. I felt great since the begining of the race, beside Fontana. At the first hills I realized that I should ride faster to beat him. I pushed during the downhill and got more tan 4 minutes! After the second transition I tried to maintain the advantage running. I was very confident, and now I can only say thanks to all the supporters and to this organization; I love this format".

It was a very exciting race with a great final sprint between Hütthaler and Collonge. "The cycling segment was quite tough and beautiful with some technical descents and hard ascents. It's a great pleasure to win in Cannes!" said Pelletier, exhausted from the effort.

Overall, the TriStar111 race featuring unique distances was well received for the first time in Cannes in the Côte D'Azur.

Italian Rodolphe Jr Von Berg and French Marjory achieved the victory on the TriStar55.5 Cannes triathlon.

When there is a triathlon close to Monaco, the famous Formula 1 drivers cannot be absent. The fastest pilots today were Alex Wurz who ranked 33th with 2:12:55 in the TriStar55.5 and Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi who finished 50th with 2:18:53. Jenson Button finally decided not to start the TriStar111 race.

Actor and driver Paul Belmondo, the TriStar Cannes Ambassador (314th overall) finished in 4:43:09 and achieved his goal: finish under 5 hours. Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg participated as a member of a team relay.

Leading the way for the elite men is Josiah Middaugh, a 34-year-old from Vail, Colorado. The 7-time XTERRA National Champ has been the most successful and consistent American in the sport for nearly a decade. As testament to his prowess, fellow pro Cody Waite (who's also on the elite squad) said "to help me improve my training and racing performance this year, my 2012 motto is WWJD - What Would Josiah Do?"

It's a motto that could serve the entire team well. Other headliners include Branden Rakita and Craig Evans, both of whom finished in the top 10 at the inaugural ITU Cross Tri World Champs in Spain last year. Rakita showed great form at the XTERRA West Championship earlier this month, and Evans has had his career-best showings in Alabama, finishing in the top six in each of the last five years (and placing third twice). More than half the squad is from Colorado, with former Mr. XTERRA Will Kelsay, Jason Michalak, and Patrick Valentine joining the ITU Cross Tri crowd for the first time.

Ryan DeCook will be making his return to the sport after battling knee injuries/surgeries the last couple seasons. Other team members - Adam Wirth, Will Ross, and Damian Gonzalez - all have a race under their belt having taken on the Nevada desert for the XTERRA West Championship earlier this month.

The American squad will certainly have their work cut out, with reigning champ Conrad "the Caveman" Stoltz determined to defend his ITU World Title. Other international notables include Aussie Chris Legh and Brit Richard Stannard. More details on the entire elite field will be released shortly.

The 2010 XTERRA World Champion Shonny Vanlandingham will lead the women's elite squad into battle.
Emma Garrard had one of her all-time top performances at ITU Worlds in Spain last year, finishing third overall just 42-seconds behind the winner - Canadian Melanie McQuaid (who will be vying to keep her ITU crown on May 19).

Suzie Snyder and Sara Tarkington return to Team USA, and their experience is sure to be a boon for the seven first-time ITU Cross Tri competitors on the squad.

The international field for the women is stacked, with reigning XTERRA World Champ Lesley Paterson racing for Great Britain, four-time XTERRA European Tour champ Renata Bucher racing for Switzerland, and Canadian super-mom Danelle Kabush all joining the fray.
