Folts & Amyot Win Inaugural Full at HITS North Country Triathlon

HITS Triathlon Series offered one of the most challenging courses of their series in Hague, New York this weekend. Touted as the hardest course in the country by full distance winner Adam Folts, 27, of Phoenix, Arizona, he still admitted it with a smile. Francine Amyot won the women's full distance race.

In typical endurance sports fashion athletes, including Folts, embraced the hills and begged for a round two HITS North Country Triathlon in 2014. "The swim was the best I have had and the sweeping corners in between three great climbs on the bike were great. This race was certainly worth the trip."

Folts flew to Detroit from Arizona Friday and drove the nine and a half hours from Michigan to New York Friday afternoon before swimming, biking and running 140.6 miles Saturday morning. Folts finished with a time of 10:01:49 - one of his best performances to date on a difficult course.

"I do triathlon because it's such a family-oriented sport and HITS promotes that aspect well. My wife is a triathlete also and she will be with me when I race at HITS Palm Springs," said Folts.

Thanks to its close approximation to Canada, a strong contingent of Canadian athletes made the trip to upstate New York for some triathlon action. Marie-Claude Ayotte, 34, from Quebec led the women in the Sprint distance race Sunday. She crossed the line in 1:30:26.

"This was my first overall win and a great experience," she said. "There were a lot of hills on the bike, but I loved every mile - the bike is my strongest part and this was one of my favorite courses."

After competing in triathlons for two years, this weekend marked the first time Marie-Claude stood at the top of the podium. "I loved this race - it was a complete package."

HITS Triathlon Series, which boasts an "a distance for everyone!"™ mantra, offered five distances in Hague. In cooperation with local race organizers, HITS Triathlon Series finalized the purchase of the North Country Triathlon and added it to the national race series last November. Once a popular and successful Sprint and Olympic event, the HITS North Country Triathlon added a Half, Full and Open, more than doubling the size of the event.

The event continued to grow the sport of triathlon as new triathletes were born from the HITS Open - a 100 meter swim, 3 mile bike and 1 mile run. Seasoned athletes, however, were welcomed to a calm-water swim in Lake George, and challenging mountain-top bike and run routes during the Sprint, Olympic, Half and Full distance events.

With year one behind him, HITS Race Director Mark H. Wilson is looking forward to making Hague, New York a permanent fixture on the HITS Triathlon Series schedule. "The location is perfect, the courses are gorgeous and it's clear that there is a large population of athletes in this part of the country who are starving for more races. We are here to stay," he said.

The 2013 HITS Triathlon Series schedule continues September 21-22 with another mountaintop race in Hunter Mountain, New York. The complete 2013 schedule is finalized and registration for all races is available at HitsTriathlonSeries.com. Due to the popular 2013 HITS pricing structure, it is expected that several of the five offered distances will sell out before each race day. As an incentive for early registration, all athletes who complete their registration more than four months out will receive 50-75% off the regular registration fee.
