DelMoSports, Lower Township and the Delaware River and Bay Authority have announced that a historic sporting event, the Inaugural Escape the Cape Triathlon & Aquabike, will take place along the Jersey Shore on June 2, 2013. The Delaware River and Bay Authority's Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lower Township, NJ will host 1000 triathletes, their families and friends for this momentous endurance event. In an exciting twist, the event will start aboard a Cape May - Lewes Ferry vessel in the Delaware Bay.

Stephen Del Monte, Founder/CEO of DelMoSports Inc. is proud to highlight Cape May County as a premier destination for endurance athletes. "Lower Township and its surrounding communities are the ideal location for an event of this caliber," said DelMonte. "The gorgeous backdrop of the ferry terminal mixed with the high emotion of the triathlon is going to bring us national recognition. It's the only event of its kind along the East Coast."

Athletes will board the ferry and journey out into the Delaware Bay where they will jump off into the waters to begin the race. The event will consist of three separate races taking place simultaneously. The Sprint Triathlon consists of a .35 mile swim, 10 mile bike, and 5km run. The International Triathlon will consist of a 1 mile swim, 20 mile bike, and 5 mile run, and the International Aquabike consisting of a 1 mile swim and 20 mile bike only.

According to Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations, the event will not only bolster the tourism economy in the region, but also heighten public awareness of what the Ferry has to offer. "We're eager for this opportunity to partner with DelMoSports to host this world class event," Gehrke said. "It emphasizes that the Ferry is not only a fun, relaxing trip across the Delaware Bay, but also that we are a spectacular waterfront destination. If you're looking for a unique, exciting experience, the Ferry is the place to be, especially on June 2."

Gehrke credited the Ferry's marketing manager, Mike Porch, and Lower Township officials for making the event a reality. "We are happy to have a good working relationship with Lower Township that will bring more events to the local community," said Porch.

"The Lower Township Department of Parks and Recreation, Township Manager Mike Voll, Mayor Mike Beck and township council, are extremely excited about our partnership with The Delaware River and Bay Authority and DelmoSports in regards to bringing the Escape the Cape Triathlon to Lower Township, New Jersey," said Mitch Plenn, Superintendent of Parks and Recreation for Lower Township. "We look forward to working together with all entities to bring a world class recreational opportunity to our region."

The Inaugural Escape the Cape Triathlon & Aquabike is expected to draw triathletes from across the region and the country as well as more than 2000 spectators. Registration for the USAT, inaugural triathlon event is currently open. For more information visit the event website at www.escapethecape.com.
