Galindez & Wurtele Win 2013 Ironman 70.3 Panama

oscar galindezSouth American triathlon veteran Oscar Galindez proved he still has what it takes to win as he and Heather Wurtele win the 2013 Ironman 70.3 Latin American Pro Championship titles in Panama.

The nearly 42-year old Galindez uncrowned last year's inaugural Ironman 70.3 Panama winner Bevan Docherty. It was Carlos Javier Quinchara Forero who was first out of the water. Galindez who was 19th out of the water moved through the men's field out on the bike course and eventually took the lead. His fastest bike split of the day gave him a nearly 2:30 minute lead over Docherty into T2. It was then time for Galindez to have a great run after a fast bike. In last year's race Docherty made up the gap out of T2 to win the race, but this year the elder Galindez did not falter and maintained a comfortable lead. It was Docherty who had the fastest run split of the day, nearly a minute faster, but it was Galindez who crossed the finish line in first.

Galindez was quoted as saying "I'm very excited, today was an exceptional day, fantastic. Everything went well" "Now I have to think about continuing to gather points to qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Las Vegas".

Docherty takes 2nd while the other elder in the group of men Richie Cunningham takes 3rd.
