Triathlon: Eastern Shore 140 Ultra Triathlon
When: Saturday, September 7, 2013
Where: Cape Charles, Virginia
Divisions: Age Group
The origins for the ultra-length triathlon can be traced back to late 1970's Hawaii, where competitors first faced off in the multi-discipline sport to see who would be crowned an "Ironman." Since those humble beginnings, the sport has grown into a global phenomenon, setting a true gold standard for endurance events. Today, annually, tens of thousands of triathletes compete in hundreds of these events around the world.
The Eastern Shore 140 is the brainchild of race director Don Mann, a Navy SEAL and former world-class triathlete himself. In his 35-year career, Mann has competed in more than 1000 events worldwide including a number of Ironman and double-Ironman races. He also holds the distinction of having produced and directed more multi-day, multi-sport events, including triathlons, adventure races and SEAL training challenges, than any other person in the world. Mann's years of experience organizing these events will ensure that the ES 140 is a challenging, yet enjoyable, experience for competitors.
The event features a course that has been carefully crafted and will push competitors to their physical and mental limits as they swim, bike and run over 140 miles in a single day. The ES 140 race gets underway from the Cape Charles Beach with competitors swimming a double loop, 2.4-mile swim in historic Chesapeake Bay. That will be followed by a 112-mile out and back bike course along Virginia's scenic backcountry roads. After that a 26.2-mile run through the downtown streets of Cape Charles.
The ES 140 website contains more information about the event, including details on the course, as well as a helpful FAQ pages. Registration is currently open for the USAT Sanctioned Eastern Shore 140 Ultra Triathlon. Check it out, the registration fee is quite reasonable as well, $375 via Active.com.
