A Look at Inaugural Triathlons Occurring in 2013

Triathlon continues to be one of the hottest sports around, with new races springing up all over the world, in populous, famous as well as remote locations. From small ones, easy ones, scenic ones, short ones, long ones to totally extreme ones, we continue to see it all. The good ones stay around possibly for years while the so-so or ones with a bad rap disappear, only to be replaced by possibly a bigger or better races.

Here is our look at the Inaugural Triathlon Events taking place in 2013. (These are the triathlon events that we are completely aware of and by no means could it be all of the new triathlon events around the world.) Our international list of triathlon has 73 races listed. Yes, some of these are re-branded events but still this is the first year under the new ownership or brand. Long course triathlons were popular additions to the race calendar with 20 new Iron Distance races and 33 Half Irons. Not far behind was 20 new Olympic Distance events with 20 new Sprint races and several new Off-Road triathlons.

As usual compared to the past several years, we see the World Triathlon Corporation with its Ironman & Ironman 70.3 branded races having many new races on the triathlon calendar. What's strange and unique is the addition of 6 new triathlon events by the Challenge Family, including the addition of races in new markets, such as North America and Asia. HITS Triathlon which added 10 new triathlons last year, adds 2 new ones in 2013. XTERRA has several new races in several new countries.
