A popular triathlon swim training venue sparks new triathlon event. Triathletes in the Northwest and Portland area will have a new triathlon event to test out starting in 2013. The inaugural Clackamas Cove Triathlon; touted as the Northwest's Best New Triathlon will have both Olympic and Sprint distance triathlons to conquer in June.

The story behind the idea for a triathlon event goes like this. Back in 2008, Patrick Bolan an Oregon City resident and his friend Tom started swimming in the Clackamas Cove and publicized it through the Portland Triathlon Club. The Cove is an old rock quarry, 20 to 50' deep, and fed by the Clackamas River. By 2012, up to 40 triathletes began showing on Wednesday nights. Also in 2012, almost every evening you could find triathletes swimming the Cove.

Previous times they tried an Adventure Swim: Around the Cove, then out the spillway into the Clackamas River and down to the boat ramp at the Park. For the Swim Course, the water temperature, water level, and river tide have to be right. The only window in 2013 where it all comes together is at 7:00 AM on June 22nd and 23rd. So, there you have it: the Clackamas Cove Triathlon on Sunday, June 23rd.

Patrick wanted to see something different. With only two open venues for Portland area triathlons in 2012, Clackamas Cove would be perfect as the third and most geographically diverse race venue starting in 2013 for Portland and other triathletes in Oregon.

You can see that local emphasis in our Run Course: through downtown Oregon City, out and back on our beautiful new bridge, and up the classic stair climb out of the downtown and on to the bluff."

The triathlon event will offer the following distances for athletes, Olympic: 1500me Swim, 24mi Bike and a 6.2mi Run or a Sprint: 500me swim, 12mi Bike and a 3.1mi Run.

For the bike course, the Clackamas River Road offers some of the best cycling in the county. Rolling hills, recently repaved, and a mild elevation gain to the turn around, which makes for a fast return on this out-and-back course that follows the River.

Registration opens soon for the inaugural Clackamas Cove Triathlon, check the website www.clackamascovetriathlon.com for details.
