NASA Grounds to Host New RocketMan Triathlon in May

Triathletes looking for a unique, new triathlon event to participate in may be interested to hear that NASA will play host to a triathlon on the grounds of Kennedy Space Center. The new RocketMan Triathlon on May 5, 2013 will give participants the opportunity to make history. The triathlon will be competed on Central Florida's Space Coast and marks the first time in history that Kennedy Space Center's secured gates have been opened for a privately coordinated public sporting event.

When: Sunday, May 5, 2013
Where: Space View Park, Titusville, FL
Events: Half, International, Classic
Website: www.kscrocketmantri.com

The RocketMan Triathlon's start, finish and transition areas will be based in Space View Park in Titusville.

The RocketMan Triathlon will offer three separate race distances - Classic+, International+ and a Half Iron - each featuring a stunning bike ride inside the secured gates of the Kennedy Space Center and around all of America's major space program landmarks. The KSC portion of the bike ride is more than 15 miles long and is sandwiched between equally beautiful scenery of the remainder of the route on the Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The "+" aspect of the Classic and International distance rides is due to the extra bicycle distance necessary to get all triathletes out and around the two Space Shuttle launch pads. Those athletes will both ride a bike course of approximately 34 miles. Competitors in the Half Iron distance race will ride the usual 56-miles.

  • • The swim, with water depths of 3-13ft, will be in the protected waters of the Indian River Lagoon.
  • • The bike will be on the Canaveral National Seashore, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and on the Kennedy Space Center grounds.
  • • The run will be on the riverside and historic streets of Titusville.

Classic+ - Swim 1/2 mile, Bike 34 miles (approx.), Run 4 miles International+ - Swim .93 miles, Bike 34 miles (approx.), Run 6.2 miles Half Iron - Swim 1.2 miles, Bike 56 miles, Run 13.1 miles

Unlike space which is infinite, the RcoketMan Triathlon will be limited to 800 athletes in each individual race. Entry opens on September 1st through www.smoothrunning.org.
