Stage Set for 2012 Life Time Minneapolis Triathlon

lifetimemplstrilogo12.pngThousands of professional and amateur triathletes will descend upon Minneapolis on Saturday, July 14 take compete in the Life Time Tri Minneapolis at beautiful Lake Nokomis. This event marks the fourth of seven events in the 2012 Race to the Toyota Cup Series where professional athletes compete across the nation for the coveted Toyota Cup, a cash purse including $574,000 in individual race awards and a 2012 Toyota vehicle.

In addition, the North American Junior Triathlon Invitational will also take place where children ages 12-17 will compete with teams from Canada and the United States for individual and group awards. Junior participants will swim 0.25 miles, bike 15.0 miles and run 3.1 miles.

The pro field will be battling for the event's $40,000 purse, with the winner in both the female and male divisions taking home $10,000 each. In addition to the cash prizes, the winners will also earn 10 points in the Race to the Toyota Cup. A $5,000 bonus goes to the winner of the equalizer race, which pits the Men against the Women. The equalizer time for the 2012 triathlon was announced as 10:34, which means the women will start before the men by that time. The lead male will need to catch and pass the lead women before she crosses the finish line for the bonus.

Back to defend their titles is 3 time winners Matty Reed and Sarah Haskins, who will be on the hunt for their fourth consecutive victories. It will be tough as this year's race features 44 pros from six countries. One of the bigger fields in a while for this race.

The race will feature several 2012 London Olympic Games bound triathletes, like Bevan Docherty who is back in Minneapolis after a long hiatus from racing here. Another guy from down under heading to London is Courtney Atkinson. A guy that doesn't have to travel far to get to London, Stuart Hayes.

From the USA Triathlon Team we have Hunter Kemper, as well as Gwen Jorgensen who is from Wisconsin but currently resides in St. Paul, MN.

Andy Potts is here. He's always a contender, as well as Cameron Dye who will be looking for some revenge after last year's nasty bike crash right before T2 while leading the race. On the women's side we have Alicia Kaye and Annabel Luxford who will be trying to dethrone Haskins.

Local Pro's David Thompson, who is a brand new dad. He recently had a son with his wife Hannah and will be back at it on the streets of Minneapolis, as well as Devon Palmer who had won the Elite Amateur race several times here.

We caught up with Matty Reed at tonight's pro meeting for this pre-race interview. See what he had to say about the Life Time Minneapolis Triathlon, can he 4-Peat! What he like about racing here are well as some off-topic answers to some questions. Like what it was like to race Ironman 70.3 Boise bike course in a wetsuit, what he thinks about the recent rant about Race Directors or Triathlon being to Soft as well as his what he'll be watching in about three weeks.

We had a chance to do an interview in Spanish with Andrea Barraza from Mexico who is here in Minneapolis to race. Tuvimos oportunidad de hacer una entrevista con Andrea Barraza de Mexico que esta aqui para el evento de 2012 Life Time Minneapolis Triathlon. Link to video: youtu.be/yXbCcJvb0qU
