New & Unique Midnight Wo/Man Triathlon in Dartford

midnight wo/man triathlon promoOrganizers have come up with a new and unique twist for their new iron / long distance Midnight Wo/Man Triathlon set to take place in August. The twist is, triathletes will gather in Dartford on August 18th to take part in the UK's first overnight iron distance triathlon. As far as we know, this has to be the first long distance triathlon race that starts at 6:00 PM and runs overnight.

The event will be staged at The Bridge, a unique science and business park development within the city which is becoming a popular triathlon venue. The Bridge was used as the venue for the standard distance triathlon that was a British qualifying event for the ITU World Championships in Beijing.

Triathlon: Midnight Wo/Man Triathlon
When: August, 18-19, 2012
Where: The Bridge, Dartford, Kent, UK
Distances: Iron, Half
Website: www.bridgetriathlon.co.uk/midnightman

The Midnight Wo/Man Triathlon features all the things a triathlete would expect at an iron distance triathlon. The race will consist of a 3.8km (2.4mi) Swim in The Bridge's South Lake; a 180km (112mi) Bike and a 42km (26.2 mile) Marathon run, all of which need to be completed in less than 17 hours. Organizers have also added a half iron distance triathlon event (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21km run) to the schedule, set to take place at the same time.

Besides being very flat and fast, organizers are touting that there will be very little chance of overheating on the bike or run with its evening start. Plus the bike course will be taking place on a closed dual carriageway, so no cars to worry about! Heck, if you live within a 100 mile distance of the race you could finish, rest and be home for dinner Sunday evening.

This isn't your typical Ironman triathlon, so expected the unexpected. Registration opens at 2:00 PM with the race starting at 6:00 PM.

The race starts with the 3.8km Swim which features 4 x 950m loops in the South Lake, with a cut off time of 8.15pm. Wetsuits will be compulsory. Athletes will exit the swim and enter the transition area before they head out on their 180km Bike. A bike course comprised of 18 x 10km loops with the majority of the course on traffic free roads with excellent lighting. The bike cut off will be at 4.30 AM. Both front and rear lights on the bike will be compulsory. After the bike, back into transition before heading out onto the run 42km, 6 x 7km loops Run. The run cut off will be at 11:00 AM.

"Triathlon is one of the country's fastest growing sports and we are delighted that Dartford is becoming such an attractive Triathlon venue," said Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council. "The new Midnight Wo/Man race is an innovative idea and I am sure it will be a great success."

Registration is open and is limited to 300 participants for the Midnight Wo/Man Triathlon.
