Nick Nothoff flew from Winston Salem, North Carolina to Ocala, Florida this weekend to not only pick up a personal best time, but boast a win in the HITS Triathlon Series - Ocala Full distance race. The 31-year-old swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles and ran 26.2 miles in a time of 10:02:04 to cap a weekend full of racing.
"This was my best full distance race ever," said Nothoff. "I flew here to take a chance on HITS [Triathlon Series] and it proved to be as high caliber as I expected. This was a great venue with superior swim and bike courses and I felt like somebody - I wasn't just another athlete in the crowd."
Looking for an early season race, Nothoff joined over 500 athletes spanning five distances over a single weekend in the rolling hills of central Florida. First-time triathletes conquered their first races on the same courses where elite athletes raced for wins and experienced racers tested their early-season training.
"Triathlons should be fun and HITS makes it fun again," said Karen Tamson, 48, of Naples, Florida. "They remind us why we love to swim, bike and run."
Tamson was the first female to cross the line in the Half distance race on Sunday to collect her second HITS Half win after a first place finish in Naples earlier in the season. Also a returning winner, Deborah Battaglia, defended her HITS Full Champion title with her fourth consecutive win in Ocala.
