With no full Ironman event on the 2012 calendar does not mean triathletes in Asia need miss out a chance at going to the big show. Last year lucky athletes won slots at 70.3 Philippines and 70.3 Phuket. Guaranteeing that athletes from the Asia-Pacific will have an opportunity to represent against the world's best on the world's largest triathlon stage this October.
The opportunity has presented itself again with 30 Kona slots up for grabs in Japan for the October World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
Japan is home to one of the largest triathlon communities in Asia. They are not just strong in numbers. Throughout Asia, the Japanese contingent, whatever age group, consistently feature in the pointy end of the results.
Do you think you have what it takes to grab a slot on their home ground?
With the addition of 30 Kona slots along with 25 slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, the race has all the hallmarks to be one hot contest that will attract not just a strong home field but athletes from all over the globe looking to capitalise on the chance of a coveted Kona slot on a 70.3 course.
It's an opportunity that doesn't come along every day and there is no guarantee this opportunity will repeat next year or at any other Asian event this year. So if you are thinking of experiencing a unique race and also fancy your chances at lining up in the big Island or Las Vegas then all your dreams could come true this June 24th.
The race this year is once again staged in and around the Centrair International Airport with athletes heading out into Tokoname city and surrounding areas on the bike and run leg. Staging a race at an international airport means getting to a race location has never been so easy. Many international airlines from leading travel hubs in Asia (Singapore), Europe (Frankfurt) and the USA (Detroit) offer direct flights into Centrair.
Two items to note is that the race has been brought forward from its original September fixture to June 24th. This will give qualifiers in both Championship events plenty of time to train.
Organizers have also made note of athlete's feedback of the technical, twisty and turning bike course that athletes have had to negotiate for the past two years.
The bike route this year will see some changes that will lead to a smoother and faster route, which will favour the less technical riders. As for weather conditions, the climate and humidity are predicted to be similar to those of September.
What are you waiting for? Sign up and stand by to realize your Ironman dream!
