Organizers of the Ironman 70.3 Cancun triathlon race, who also have the contract for the Ironman Cozumel event have decided to move the Ironman 70.3 Cancun event to Cozumel island starting in 2012. In September, the 6th edition of Ironman 70.3 Cancun took place. Now athletes will have a new venue starting in 2012 with Ironman 70.3 Cozumel. It's scheduled to take place on the island for the next 4 years in the same time frame as the original event, late September.

The 1.9 km Swim, 90 km Bike and 21 km Run event will be a great opportunity for triathletes to check out the area and/or do a training event in preparation for Ironman Cozumel which normally takes place at the end of November. Course details are being finalized, but it's expected that it will incorporate part of, if not all of the Ironman course.
Registration for the new Ironman 70.3 Cozumel race is now open and will be limited to 1,500 triathletes. The event will have 50 qualifying slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2013.
