Course Records for Farlow, Moeller at Ironman UK

imukfarlow11.jpgIt was a record breaking day for a pair of first-time Ironman champions in Bolton, Lancashire as Aaron Farlow and Kirsten Moeller set new course records at the 2011 Ironman UK triathlon. Under near perfect conditions Farlow not only set a new course record time of 8:24:34, he also set a new bike course record 4:53:47 and a run course record 2:41:46 during his day. It was a great day for Moeller as well as she also sets a new women's course record with her winning time of 9:19:04. Over 1,200 athletes including remembers of Team True Spirit took part in the iron distance race which starts and finishes in three locations for each discipline.

On the men's side Oliver Simon was first out of the water in 44:58, closely followed by Romain Guillaume (45:04) and Farlow (45:01). Guillaume took an early lead on the bike course until Farlow passed him. TeamTBB athlete Farlow was a late entry into the Ironman race. Earlier in the week Farlow was in France at the Alpe d'Huez Long Course triathlon where he took third place before arriving in Bolton. He blazed through the bike course into T2 with a sizable lead and then extended that lead out on the run with his fast 2:41:45 run split. Farlow wins his first Ironman title and shatters Fraser Cartmell 8:40:17 course record set in 2010. Guillaume did all he could do on the day and takes second while Nick Saunders takes third.

Talk about a busy week. After the race Farlow was hopping on a plane back to Australia to get back home in time for his son's christening.

imukmoeller11.jpgDiana Riesler and Moeller we also last minute entries into the race on the women's side, going up against defending champion Yvette Grice. On the swim, Grice of Great Britain led the women out of the water with a nice lead over Riesler and Moeller. Her time of 50:32 was nearly six minutes on Moeller who was second out of the water. But it would be Riesler who would take the lead on the bike course and hold that heading into T2 with a 5:25:56 split, a new bike course record. She was followed into T2 by Grice and Moeller. She had a commanding eleven minute lead on Grice to start the run. Early into the run Team Abu Dhabi athlete Moeller, who flatted in Frankfurt, passed Grice for second place with her eye on fellow German Riesler. She was second last year at Ironman Wisconsin. On the run Moeller nearly duplicated what Farlow had down earlier a blazing run. Moeller passed Riesler late into the run for the victory and her first Ironman title. It was reported that her blazing run split was 2:41:57, only eleven second off of Farlow's time. Riesler holds on for second. Defending champion Grice goes twenty minutes faster than last year's winning time but only manages a third place.

Notable DNF's for the day include that of Desiree Ficker.

ttsTownsend.jpgIt was a great day for Team True Spirit as they set out to conquer Ironman UK, most as relay team. There was one athlete from the team, Joe Townsend who was attempting to do the entire race himself. The 26 year old ex-Royal Marines Commando was injured in an IED blast in February 2008. He and his buddies trained hard for this race. The double leg amputee shows the crowd something truly amazing and heroic. In true Ironman motto fashion he proves that "Anything is possible" conquering Ironman UK with a sub-13 Ironman finish with 12:56:38 time.
