It looks like everything is being finalized for a new iron-distance race announcement soon. Everything appears to be set for Australia to host it's third Ironman race in the global series with the new Ironman Melbourne race in 2012. The new triathlon event in Victoria would host the Asia-Pacific Championship with qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championship race in Hawaii

This would be the third addition to be annouced this year to the global Ironman series in 2012 behind the two other new races, Ironman US Championship and ronman Mont-Tremblant.
The race would take place in March in Melbourne, which is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and is the second biggest city in Australia after Sydney.
Ironman Melbourne will start and finish within the central business district. It would loop around iconic Melbourne attractions.
Here is a possible course description for those that might be interested in this new Ironman race down under.
The 2.4 mile Swim would be a 2-loop rectangle running counter-clockwise from the south side of Docklands Harbourtown. Athletes will exit the water and run around a marker on the man made beach before re-entering the bay for the second loop.
The 112 mile Bike would be a 2 lap course that would travel along the famous beach road that sees over 10,000 cyclists each weekend. With amazing views over the bay and the warm weather, this will be an amazing ride for all athletes. It is flat and fast in both directions and in part the road is 4 lanes wide.
The 26.2 mile Run would traversing from the Dockland to Port Melbourne, will also travel along the running track adjacent to the bay. This will be one of the most spectacular run legs in any Ironman on the current circuit.
