The 10th Anniversary of the Life time Minneapolis Triathlon is coming up this weekend. It's the fourth stop on the Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup. For some insight on the race we catch up with local professional triathlete David Thompson for an interview to see if he's racing this great urban triathlon race we have here in our own back yard.
Back in 2002 when Life Time Fitness took over the race, David entered the race as an elite amateur before turning pro. Now 10 years later we'll see him racing against one of the other elite amateurs racing that day, current Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series points leader Andy Potts. From amateurs to pros 10 years later...
Back in 2007 David was 13th out of the swim, about 1:15 down on the leaders when he got out on the bike course. Being a local race for him, he has the opportunity to preview, ride and plan his attack for the bike course and it paid off that day with an impressive bike ride. David, known for his strong and fast bike managed to cut the lead and put two minutes on the men into T2 with a 54:53 bike split and a new course record which still stands. His bike handling skills on the streets of Minneapolis, which features some technical portions of roadway, continues to amaze other professional men racing here at the Life Time Minneapolis Triathlon. We'll see what he can do this year out on the bike course and overall.
We get David's input on the race. See what he thinks about organizers bring back the Equalizer or Battle of the Sexes format for the pro race plus get some tips for the newbie triathletes racing the race for the first time.
The Life Time Minneapolis Triathlon begins with a swim in Lake Nokomis. After leaving the lake, competitors transition to their bike for a great ride around Minneapolis and into St. Paul after crossing the Mississippi river, then into Minneapolis while riding through neighborhoods via the parkways. Competitors then leave their bikes in transition and finish the race on foot around Lake Nokomis.
