It has been rumored for a while and now appears to be coming to life. An announcement is coming later today that will introduce the 28th race in the Ironman global series. The new Ironman U.S. Championships triathlon set to take place in New York City next summer will be the 10th Ironman race in United States and the second new Ironman race to take place in August in the Northeast. Just yesterday Ironman Mont-Tremblant was announced across the border in Canada.

The inaugural 2012 Ironman U.S Championship is a new additional to the prestigious Ironman global series. The 140.6-mile race will take place in parts of both New York City and New Jersey, making it the most metropolitan environment ever to host an Ironman.
The inaugural Ironman U.S. Championship begins with a wave start, 2.4-mile point-to-point swim in the Hudson River. The 112-mile bike course spans the cliffs of Palisades Parkway in Bergen and Rockland Counties followed by a 26.2-mile run course beginning in New Jersey and running over the George Washington Bridge with a finish at 81st Street in the heart of the city in in Riverside Park in Manhattan.
The inaugural Ironman U.S. Championship is slated for August 11, 2012 and will offer 75 Age Group qualifying slots for the 2012 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i with more than 2,500 participants from around the world. Additionally, there will be a prize purse of $100,000 for distribution among the top professional male and female finishers.
It looks like registration will open on Wednesday, June 15, at noon ET at www.ironmanuschampionship.com.
