At 7:30am on Saturday, June 11, 2011 Charles Futrell, 90 years old, from The Villages, FL and Tony Handler, 72 years old, from Poinciana, FL will be among several hundred triathletes who will be competing in the Central Florida Triathlon Series Race #2. A Sprint Distance triathlon series comprised of 5 races from May through September.
Mr. Futrell became the oldest man to finish an USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned duathlon (1 mile run, 10 mile bike, 3 mile run) on May 14, 2011. By USAT rules, which use the racerʼs age on December 31st as their racing age, Mr. Futrell is 91 years old. Mr. Futrellʼs finish time was 2:09:07. When he crosses the finish line at Clermontʼs Waterfront Park on Saturday, he will become the oldest man to complete an USAT sanctioned triathlon.
For the triathlon race on Saturday, Mr. Futrell will first complete a 440 yard swim in Lake Minneola prior to beginning the 10 mile bike portion and then finishing off with the 3 mile run. Learn more about Charles "Charlie" Futrell here Going the distance [via The Daily Commercial]
The sprint distance race will also feature another triathlete of note, Mr. Handler who is a 6 time cancer survivor and has completed 244 triathlons.
Besides the triathlon & duathlon, Sommer Sports will also have the Cool Summer Mornings 5K at 7:45am. The dates of the series are May 14, June 11, July 16, August 13, and September 10.

On Sunday, June 12, 2011, at 7:30am, triathletes from around the United States will be racing in the 27th Annual Florida Challenge Triathlon. The event features two different distance courses: Long Course (70.3 miles): 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike (which includes Sugarloaf Mtn), 13.1 mile run. Some people call this distance a half iron distance. Short Course (Olympic/International Distance): 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run.
