Orange County, California will be setting for a new Half Iron Distance triathlon this Fall. The inaugural Orangeman Half-Distance Triathlon will feature an amazing course where triathletes swim in the beautiful Pacific Ocean off Salt Creek Beach Park; bike through the cities of Dana Point & San Juan Capistrano towards the turnaround that sits near the top of the majestic Ortega Highway; then run on the scenic Salt Creek Regional Trail and finish on the coast.
The triathlon event taking place on September 25th will feature a Half-Iron Distance Triathlon with Relay option, a Half-Iron Aquabike and an 1.2mi Open-Water Swim. The swim course typically boasts the warmest temperatures of the year, the bike course features a nice climb into Cleveland National Forest and the run course never touches a street because it's all on trails.
The swim portion of the Orangeman Triathlon is 1.2 miles long and will start and end in front of the Niguel Marine Life Refuge. The swim course will be a beach start and head directly out into the ocean for approximately 150 meters, turn north for approximately 750 meters, turn west for approximately 25 meters, turn south for 800 meters, and then heading back to shore for approximately 175 meters. At the completion of the Swim the athletes will run to the transition area in Salt Creek Beach Park.
The one loop bike course for the Orangeman Triathlon is 56 miles long and will start and end at the Salt Creek Beach Park. The bike portion is an "out‐and‐back" that takes the athletes from Salt Creek Beach Park east through the cities of Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and out Ortega Highway (74). There is a turnaround on Ortega Highway (74) at approximately mile 22 of eastbound Ortega Highway (74), which is 28 miles into the bike course.
The run course for the Orangeman Half-Iron Distance Triathlon is 13.1 miles long and is a "two loop" course that will start and end at the Salt Creek Beach Park. The run starts on the recreational trail at Salt Creek Beach Park and heads northeast to the Sea Terrace Community Park for a 1/4 mile loop in the park and back to the trail. The course then proceeds north through the Salt Creek Regional Corridor and turns around at approximately mile 3.3.
Registration is currently open for the new Orangeman Triathlon; visit the event website www.orangemantriathlon.com for details. This is a USAT Sanctioned event. There aren't many other half-iron distance triathlons in the area, so register early as this will be a popular event for triathletes in the area.
