Columbus to host inaugural two-day multisport festival offering activities for folks at all skill levels; $30,000 in prizes available for triathletes
Columbus, Ohio - On July 30 and 31, Columbus will host the first Giant Eagle Multisport Festival, offering two days of multisport events for the entire family.
The activities kick off on Saturday with the women's only Giant Eagle Triathlon for the Cure, with proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Columbus Affiliate. Sunday features the Giant Eagle Triathlon, which offers both male and female participants a unique point-to-point Olympic and Sprint distance triathlon starting from Alum Creek State Park and finishing in downtown Columbus, Ohio in the Arena District.
Triathlon participants will be treated to a swim course in the calm waters of Alum Creek Lake. From there participants will cycle on a flat and fast bike course that rolls through the pristine Columbus neighborhoods of Worthington and Clintonville, and includes a tour of The Ohio State University before reaching transition #2 in downtown. The event will be capped off with a run through downtown Columbus, past many Columbus landmarks before culminating with a grand finish in the Arena District.
Other events will be held on Sunday as well, allowing everyone and anyone to participate. Hundreds of runners and walkers are expected to take part in the Giant Eagle 5k Run and the Giant Eagle 2k Fitness Walk in downtown Columbus.
"The Giant Eagle Multisport Festival brings world class triathlon racing, along with family friendly running and walking events to Ohio for the first time." said Shannon Kurek, event Race Director. "We are thrilled to be launching this event alongside Giant Eagle, an organization who matches our passion for encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle."
"Giant Eagle is committed to improving the overall health and wellness of the communities we serve," said Rob Borella, Giant Eagle Senior Director of Corporate Communications. "We also actively support the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and are excited that the Columbus affiliate will benefit from our efforts."
Race officials anticipate the event will attract an international field of over 60 professional triathletes battling for a piece of the $30,000 prize purse and more than 2000 amateurs from across the Midwest to attend the inaugural event.
Registration and race information will be available on March 15, 2011 for all events at www.GiantEagleMultisportFestival.com or by contacting customerservice@hfpracing.com.
