Martha's Vineyard, an island off the south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts is set to host a new triathlon event later this summer with the inaugural Vineyard Warrior Triathlon. The triathlon event will take place on September 11, 2011. The Olympic Distance triathlon event will span the towns of Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, West Tisbury, and Edgartown. The beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard provides a scenic and challenging course for all.

Vineyard Warrior is a challenging course. From Oak Bluffs racers will challenge the current and average 69 degree water temperatures of Vineyard Sound waters for 1 mile swim, then transitioning to a grueling 26 mile cycle through Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, West Tisbury, Edgartown and back into Oak Bluffs. Belying their beauty the rolling island hills nevertheless will take their toll. Legs and lungs will burn. Those undaunted will speed on, leaving others, less strong, perhaps less capable of enduring, to marvel at the scenic backdrop. It will take a Warrior to complete this race. The event will be limited to the first 600 registered participants.
NOTE: No flights to Martha's Vineyard have the capability to carry bikes. Most ferries allow bikes and charge a small additional fee. If you prefer to save the hassle then ship your bike to the island with UPS or Fedex.
September is a beautiful month to visit the Vineyard which means it can still be busy, so travel arrangements should be made in advance especially if you plan on bringing your car with you. Special lodging packages are available to Vineyard Warrior athletes; check the event website for details.
A portion of event proceeds goes to the Martha's Vineyard Boys and Girls Club and the Oak Bluffs Parks department for beautification and preservation of its amazing public parks.
