Announcing First Annual Grand Rapids Triathlon


grand rapids triathlon.jpgAll is set for the city of Ada, Michigan to host the new and first annual Grand Rapids Triathlon to be held on June 5, 2011. The early season event will offer participants Sprint, Olympic, and Half Iron distances.

The event is being organized by Tris4Health, which offers race director guidance, hands on event coordination, assistance with generating sponsorship dollars, and equipment rental along with being triathletes themselves. Their passion is getting people involved and healthy.

The swim portion of the event will take place in the Thornapple River, right at the Dam in Ada. Three distances are being offered so athletes of varying skill levels can have the opportunity to compete. The Sprint distance race will consist of: 750me Swim, 20km Bike and 5km Run. The Olympic distance will have a: 1.5km Swim, 40km Bike and 10km Run. The Half Iron will be 1.2mi Swim, 56mi Bike and 13.1mi Run. Some portions of the course will be shared by the three race distances.

Mike Guswiler, Executive Director of the West Michigan Sports Commission, stated "We are excited to work with the Tris4Health group as they put on this first annual triathlon. The greater Grand Rapids area is becoming known for our health and running enthusiasts and we look forward to hosting hundreds of triathletes from many different areas to show off our great quality of life."

Andy Vidro, Grand Rapids Triathlon Race Director, stated "We are excited to bring this type of long-awaited event to the Grand Rapids area. The athletes are excited and the businesses of Ada Township community have been very supportive. We know this will be a great event for years to come."

The Grand Rapids Triathlon will be raising funds for the Miles for Special Smiles organization. Miles for Special Smiles is a non-profit organization dedicated to help disabled children reach their God-given potential.

 - Sprint Triathlon: $70.00
 - Olympic Triathlon: $80.00
 - 1/2 Iron Triathlon: $155.00
