Ironman Florida Bike Course Modified

Ironman Florida, which takes place November 6, 2010 will have a new bike course for participants this year. Participant safety and traffic congestion seem to be the focus of the change, especially when you have over 2,400 triathletes participating in the event.

A considerable change to the bike course was made, eliminating the use of County 388 between State 79 and State 77. The elimination means the big loop that was previously done from State 79 back via Country 388 is gone. The new route is more like an out and back on State 79 and State 20 with a smaller loop. Organizers and officials were concerned about traffic heading to and from Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport and drivers contending with participants out on the road.

The elevation map doesn't appear to have been updated on the website yet as it still looks exactly the same as last year. This part of Florida is flat, so don't look for significant changes that way. Don't expect to see much change to the one issue that has plagued the Ironman Florida bike course.

The longer stretches of two-way traffic should give spectators along the bike course a better chance of seeing their participant without having to move around on the course.

Participants are encouraged to review the new bike course layout and be familiar with the route before the actual start of the race.
