Western Australia Joins Series with Ironman 70.3 Busselton


ironman 70.3 busseltonAustralia's Triathlon WA organization has confirmed that one of the oldest triathlon races within Western Australia will be re-branded as an Ironman 70.3 race starting in 2011. The The Busselton Half Ironman will now be known as the Ironman 70.3 Busselton event and will continue to take place as part of the Busselton Festival of Triathlon which has been around since 2002. The triathlon festival is set to take place on Saturday May 7, 2011.

This is the 7th new race for 2011 in the ever growing Ironman 70.3 Series and the second new event in Australia. Earlier this year the Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie event was added to the series to be run in-conjunction with Ironman Australia. The new replaces the existing Ironman 70.3 Geelong event that was previously held

The Ironman 70.3 Busselton race will take competitors on the same course - a 1.9km Swim along the Busselton Jetty, a 90km Bike ride through the Tuart Forests and a 21.1km Run along the gorgeous Busselton Foreshore in Geographe Bay. Ironman 70.3 Busselton will serve as a qualifier for Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships and will offer a Professional prize purse of $15,000.00 US. NOTE: The new Ironman 70.3 Busselton event does not feature any qualifying slots to the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3 race in Clearwater.

Triathlon WA President Peter Rash said "We are pleased to enter into this long term agreement with WTC. We have a good working relationship and we value that WTC recognizes the importance of the event for the future of triathlon in WA and its role in providing TWA with financial assistance to administer the sport. Triathlon WA and WTC have clear common objectives to grow the sport of triathlon and we look forward to further opportunities the partnership may provide."

The race was one of the 6 races in the Australian Half Ironman Triathlon Series and has grown to an iconic triathlon event within Western Australia, nationally and in the Asia Pacific region, with the 2010 event having almost 2000 competitors.
