Get your aero-cowboy hats ready because we will probably see a new Ironman race in 2011 with the addition of a new qualifying triathlon race in the state of Texas.
After months of planning and negotiating, The Woodlands Township is finalizing an agreement with the World Triathlon Corporation to bring and host the premier international endurance triathlon event in the community in 2011. A vote is expected to take place by the township board at its meeting on June 23, 2010.
The Woodlands is a master-planned community within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area with and estimated population of 90,000. The Woodlands is located 30 miles north of Downtown Houston along Interstate 45 and is roughly 23 miles away from the major international airport serving Houston, TX.
The new Ironman Texas event would be one of 23 races across the world to qualify athletes for the Ironman World Championship race in Kona, Hawaii. The 2.4mi Swim, 112mi Bike and 26.2mi Run triathlon has been proposed to take place on Saturday, May 21, 2011. The race would be produced by the World Triathlon Corporation.
The swim is expected to be held in Lake Woodlands, with racers entering Northshore Park and exiting at Town Green Park. The bike course is still in the works but is expected to extend out into the community and the county. The marathon would likely be contained within the community with the finish area somewhere in Town Center.
This would be the 11th Ironman event to take place in North America if you include the Ironman World Championship race in Hawaii and the 8th qualifying event in the United States alone. It would have been the 24th event on the 2011 Ironman calendar; but it appears that Ironman Malaysia held in Langkawi, Malaysia will most likely not be taking place.
Other recent additions to Ironman schedule include the recently run inaugural Ironman St. George race in Utah and the second Ironman race in Germany, Ironman Regensburg set to take place in August.
