Austin, Texas - Red Licorice Events and Jack & Adam's Bicycles announced that they are collaborating on a series of races in and around the Austin, Texas area that will enable athletes to complete a distance of 140.6 miles (the combined distance of an iron distance race) over a series of events that involve the three disciplines of a triathlon, swimming biking and running. The new Sub17 Series will be a staged iron distance race designed to keep people motivated throughout the season.
"Most triathletes, especially those competing in iron distance events, are constantly asked 'do you have to go all 140.6 miles in one day?'" notes series director, Joey Trimyer. "We thought it would be fun to offer a way to get in the 140.6 miles of a long triathlon without having to do it in one day. Sub17 is a play on the 17 hour cutoff time at most iron distance races."
The following events have been selected for participation in the inaugural Sub17 Series:
What: Open Water Swim
When: Saturday, May 1, 2010
Where: West Lake Beach, Austin, Texas

When: Saturday, October 23, 2010

Athletes will complete a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike, and a full 26.2 mile marathon in order to finish the series. Each event will be timed and rankings will tabulated based on cumulative times. Everyone who finishes the series in under 17 hours will receive a finisher's premium, and age group awards will be presented at the Red Licorice Events end of year party in November.
