Llanos, Dibens Win Inaugural Abu Dhabi Triathlon

Eneko Llanos of Spain and Julie Dibens from the UK made history in the United Arab Emirates as they clinched the inaugural Abu Dhabi International Triathlon. They endure the heat and the new bike focused course to win the top prize of $50,000 USD in today's triathlon.

Llanos came from behind to win the 223kms race in a time of 6:34:37, nearly a minute ahead of second placed Dirk Bockel from Luxemburg and a host of other world class favorites. Dibens dominated from start to finish clinching the victory on the Women's side. This was the longest race ever for Dibens who is the current Ironman 70.3 and XTERRA World Champion.

Local favorite Faris Al-Sultan of Team Abu Dhabi Triathlon put in the fastest time on the initial loop of the bike but a technical issue on the course saw him lose precious time, he finishes the day in sixth place.

As expected, athletes endured sweltering conditions as the temps peaked to 90 degrees with hardly any wind. They conquered a race that consisted of a 3km Swim, 200km Bike and a 20km Run.

It was an unfortunate day for Rachel Joyce who suffered a deep cut on her foot exiting T1.

Technical difficulties marred the initial coverage of the race from Abu Dhabi. Information was sparse for many people wanting to hear any news from the race. This was posted via the AbuDhabiTri twitter account "There's been a delay in tech info coming thru to us here which will be resolved shortly. Apologies and updates to follow"

One of the most anticipated races of 2010 is now in the books. Based on some of the initial feedback coming from Abu Dhabi, it appears that the race was a success and definitely made it mark today.
