Triathletes who are still hesitant about doing an entire half iron distance triathlon on their own but would like to part take in the race one way or another have a new participation option, doing the event as a Relay. The new Relay format option will allow teams of three to tackle the course and experience what an Ironman branded race has to offer.
Relays aren't new to the sport of Triathlon; they are just fairly new to Ironman 70.3 events. The series currently has about 15 events in the Ironman 70.3 Series with relay options, according to the 2010 Ironman 70.3 Series Race Map.
Alison Boon from Ironman UK comments: "The UK IRONMAN 70.3 Team event is an exciting prospect because it allows the next generation of Ironman athletes to sample the atmosphere, organisation and support of an official Ironman race. For those who are new to the sport, or experienced racers looking for something different to try, this offers an exciting new opportunity."
The team format has already proved a big hit in Europe and opened up the Ironman brand to a whole new group of athletes. This allows individuals who wish to try triathlon, to do so under the umbrella of one of the most widely recognised global sporting brands.
An Ironman 70.3 triathlon race consists of a 1.2 mile Swim, 56 mile Bike and 13.1 mile Run.
