South America is not immune to the popularity of the sport of triathlon as seen by the influx of new events added over the last couple of years in various countries. The demand for additional events and bigger challenges is something that triathletes look for locally or abroad. Now athletes won't have to go too far when looking for an Iron Distance triathlon race now that Uruguay's first full Iron Distance triathlon event (which was only a rumor) has been announced; superTRIA Piriápolis.

The country already plays host to a half iron distance event in Punta del Este, but this will be the country's first full iron distance triathlon event. The new triathlon event is set to take place in Piriápolis, a coastal city located in Maldonado, Uruguay, which is about an hour's drive east of the national capital, Montevideo. It's a summer resort destination in the country. Because of its resort status, it has a relatively small permanent population.
The inaugural event will start small with a cap of 400 participants and will consist of the standard iron distances of a 3.8km Swim, 180km Bike and 42km Run. The 3.8km swim will be an M-shaped ocean swim from the main beach in the city. The 180km bike course will be a 3 loop course while the 42km run will be a 4 loop course along the ocean.
The saying goes "When it rains it pours" and that seems to be the case here. Stay tuned because we have news of another iron distance race in Uruguay to be announced once all the details are finalized.
Registration is now open for the new superTRIA Piriápolis iron distance triathlon event in Uruguay. Check the website for details (Spanish) or use this link to register. It appears that the registration fee is $250 USD before December 31, 2009 and $300 USD after.
