The inaugural Revolution3 Triathlon (Half-Rev) takes place this weekend (June 7, 2009) in Middlebury, Connecticut at the Quassy Amusement Park. The inaugural triathlon will feature the largest professional purse prize of any regular season half iron distance event of its kind, $100,000, coupled with $20,000 in cash and prizes for our age-group athletes. Besides that, the Revolution3 Triathlon is focused on offering a fun, first class race experience for athletes and spectators. The triathlon race will consist of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.
The large professional prize purse has attracted some of the biggest names in the sport of triathlon in both the men's and women's professional field, currently around 52 athletes. The most notable professional that will be in attendance but won't be racing will be 5 x Ironman Champion Heather Gollnick who just returned from Florianopolis, Brazil with a 3rd place finish at Ironman Brazil. By the end of the day Gollnick will probably feel just as worn out as she does when she races because she and her husband will be busy putting on the race. Some of the professionals that will be shooting for the $16,000 1st place money are listed below. You can see the full list of confirmed professionals and see their bio's here.

The race has attracted a lot of buzz in the half iron distance event arena, going up against the popular Ironman 70.3 series races. No other race besides the World Championship race in Clearwater and possibly this years Ironman 70.3 New Orleans have you see a profession field like this. The prize money alone on both the pro and amateur side blows the 70.3 races out of the water. You can read about the scenic and challenging bike and run courses here.
In its first year, the race has attracted the likes of Slowtwitch.com and Insidetri.com, both who will be providing live coverage of the race via the internet. Spectators on-site will be able to follow the race via six cameras strategically placed throughout the course with a live broadcast feed.
The race will also feature some cutting edge technology from Trakkers which will be providing real time GPS tracking so all the fans can follow their favorite athletes. It's unclear at this time if any or the entire pro field will be tracked or not with this new technology. Athlete wear a device that transmits various bits of information every 30 seconds which includes athlete’s current speed/pace, max speed/pace, distance, heart rate, average heart rate. Family and friends will be able to track an athlete with laptops made available under the Trakkers tent. Triathletes can then review all of their information after the race.
Revolution3 has plans to add two new events in 2010. The second event planned for 2010 is an Olympic distance triathlon (.9 mile swim, 24 mile bike and 6.2 mile run) followed by a Full-Rev (2.4 miles swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run) rounding out the season in 2010.
