Over 2,100 athletes gathered today in chilly Oceanside, California for the 2009 running of the Ironman 70.3 California triathlon event.
Andy Potts started the day off with a new swim course record (21:27) but was unable three peat today as Matt Reed surges to victory on the run, at the same time setting a new run course record with a split of 1:11:15. According to the live coverage on Ironman.com Matt said he had an asthma attack during the swim and nearly dropped out of the race, good thing he persevered and continued the race. Reed was down at least two minutes to Potts on the swim but made up the difference out on the bike course. Potts finished the day in second place, two minutes behind Reed.
It was an exciting race to the finish on the women's as the top 3 women finished less than 41 seconds apart. Mirinda Carfrae, the 2007 Ironman 70.3 World Champ surged to victory on the run as well using her record breaking run split of 1:20:22 to get past Sarah Groff in the late stages of the run. Groff held on for 2nd place while Leanda Cave, who was right behind her took 3rd. Defending champ Erika Csomor finished the day in 4th place.

This early season half ironman race always has cold water temps and today was no exceptions. The water temp at the start of the race was a chilly 59 degrees.
