Tomorrow we will see the announcement of the new Ironman St. George race set to take place the first weekend in May 2010.
Back in 2002 the city of Provo, Utah was hosting it's innagural Ironman Utah triathlon event. The race was being staged on the shores of Utah Lake.
"The scheduled start of Ironman Utah was nearly five minutes away the morning of June 8 as hundreds of racers forged ahead into Utah Lake. Frustrated race organizers eventually succumbed to the disorganized swarm and fired their canon to start the race but then 30 minutes later officials were struggling to get everyone out of the water"
Five minutes after the start of the race 40 mph winds turned the relatively calm waters of Utah Lake into chaos with 3-foot swells. In the end, a 53-year-old California man died. Nearly two months later Graham Fraser announced that the Utah race would be cancelled and moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in 2003.
