DC'S INNER CITY YOUTH LEARN FITNESS AND LIFE SKILLS THROUGH TRIATHLON TRAINING SUMMER PROGRAM
Program part of overall strategy to teach children to lead healthy and successful lifestyles over the summer months.
WASHINGTON, DC - ACHIEVE Kids Tri, Inc., a Washington, DC based 501(c)(3) organization that designs and implements youth-based triathlon training and fitness programs, announced today the launch of its summer programs in Washington, DC and Houston, TX. In partnership with the District of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and Houston Department of Parks and Recs, ACHIEVE takes kids through a 6-week instruction and training program, provided free of charge, insured and monitored by experienced and trained coaches. The ACHIEVE program helps kids master the fundamentals of swimming, cycling, running, and triathlon racing, as well as the essentials of proper nutrition, stretching, strength-training, and flexibility. The ACHIEVE program concludes each season with a timed short-course triathlon race, certified and sanctioned by the USA Triathlon Association (USAT) www.usatriathlon.org.
The 2009 summer camp will take place June 15-July 24 and will take place at three sites in Washington, DC: the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, Kenilworth Parkside Recreation Center, and starting in 2009, the Benning Park Community Center. The program runs Monday through Friday from 9 am - 12:30 pm. Under ACHIEVE's motto of "Enriching Lives Through Sport," the program will include USAT-trained coaches teaching kids triathlon skills, and how leading a healthy fitness-oriented lifestyle can help them succeed in life.
At the final day of camp, July 24th, kids will compete in The 3rd Annual DC Kids Triathlon. This race will be sanctioned by the USAT and produced by The Nation's TriathlonT. This kid-sized triathlon will include athletes from all three camps and will take place at Kenilworth Parkside Recreation Center. The race will feature a 100m swim, 5k bike and a 3k run. There will be professional timing, a finish line banner, finishers medal, finishers t-shirt, a finish line photo and more. As USAT members racing in a USAT sanctioned triathlon they will officially record their first sanctioned triathlon finish time!
In addition to the DC sites, there are two camps taking place this summer in Houston, TX. Organized by Charles Moser, they will be located on the campus of Texas Southern University and MacGregor Community Center in the city of Houston. The Houston Kids Triathlon will take place on August 7th.
ACHIEVE is a free camp that relies on donations to provide youth with all of the equipment that they will need during the program. Donations can be directed to a specific camp or region and go to support the purchase of swimsuits, goggles, swim caps, swim fins, pull buoys, kickboards, bikes, helmets, cycling jerseys, and other training gear. Registration is free, but space is limited. To register, make a donation, or inquire about volunteering or coaching for one of the ACHIEVE camps, go to www.achievekidstri.org.
