A new triathlon series has been announced by the Petersburg Triathlon Group in Illinois. The Abraham Lincoln Triathlon Series will be part of the activities endorsed by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission which will be celebrating the 200th birthday of President Lincoln.
The triathlons are scheduled for April 18, 2009 and August 15, 2009 and offer the chance to swim, bike and run with varying degrees of difficulty and distances to challenge both the new and seasoned triathlete. The Series consists of two events on each day, the April events include the Abe's Mini Triathlon and the Pioneer Sprint Triathlon. The August events include the Stovepipe Sprint Triathlon and the Railsplitter Triathlon. All races will be sanctioned by USA Triathlon.
Events offered in the series provide unparalleled views of the city of Petersburg, while providing unprecedented access to Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, the Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Park and the chance to race in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln. In fact, you will be able to race in the same area where in 1831 Abraham Lincoln became the nations' first multisport athlete by accepting the challenge to run, wrestle and fight an opponent.
