Earlier this year came the announcement that an old iron distance race was going to be revived after a long hiatus. (New Ireman 226 Challenge Triathlon Event in 2009) Now comes news that another new Iron Distance race will take place in Ireland in 2009 with the announcement of the Éireman Long Distance and Middle Distance triathlon event set to take place in Wexford. The two Full and Half distance events will take place on back-to-back consecutive weekends in August.

Race organizers have incorporated Irish Mythology and Triathlon together to create this unique race theme. The Éireman Male & Female winners will be 'crowned' in a lavish ceremony by Druids. They will be crowned at the finish line through Lia Fail or "Stone of Destiny" and receive the Gáe Assail or "Lightning Spear", all of which are objects described in Irish Mythology.
The race will also feature a Half Iron Distance triathlon as well as the Éireman Warrior Kids race. The Long distance event will consist of a 2.4mi Swim, 112mi Bike, 26.2mi Run, while the half will be the standard distance of 1.2mi Swim, 56mi Bike, 13.1mi Run. The race will be limited to 1,500 entries. Bring the family, since the Éireman Warrior Kids race will actually take place on Saturday, the day before the race (exact details can be found on the race website).
The Éireman course will be fast. The swim is protected by a sand bank resulting in a sheltering effect. There are no hills really worth mentioning on the bike course. The run course can only be described as beautiful, interesting and flat.
Registration is currently open for the new Éireman triathlon event in Ireland. Organizers currently have and Early Bird special offer on registration, but it's only valid until the February 28, 2009, so make sure to register early.
