New Scenic, Bike Challenging Triathlon in Southern Minnesota

trinonalogo.jpgThere are few places on this planet that are more perfectly suited to host a triathlon than Winona, Minnesota. With every stroke, pedal and stride, you’ll encounter incredible views and beautiful terrain. Following the swim, you will begin your journey into the true calling card for this event, the Mississippi River Bluff Country.

Triathlon: Trinona Triathlon
When: Sunday, June 14, 2009 @ 7:00 AM
Where: Lake Winona, Winona, Minnesota, USA
Divisions: Age Group, Relays
Website: www.trinona.com

The Trinona Triathlon is being billed as one of the most challenging triathlons in the entire Midwest. Why, well it’s all about the bike. The Olympic distance race will feature a 1.25+ mile climb up Garvin Heights, a switchback up the face of the Winona bluffs that features a 9% average grade. The climb was profiled in Bicycling Magazine as one of the “Top 100 Climbs in the United States” and was a favorite of three-time Tour de France champion, Greg LeMond. The reward for the challenge comes a few miles later with a thrilling, winding descent down the bluff towards the St. Mary’s University campus and then a flat and fast run around Lake Winona.

The new race will feature two triathlons to choose from, and Olympic Distance race and a Sprint Distance race. The Olympic Distance race will be the standard 1.5km Swim, a 40km Bike and a 10km Run. The Sprint Distance triathlon will consist of a 1/4mi Swim, a 12mi Bike and a 3mi Run.

The Trinona Triathlon has partnered with the Morrie Miller Athletic Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports Winona-area youth athletics. Part of the proceeds from the triathlon will also go towards the foundation.
