Kiwi's Warriner and Gemmell Win Last BG World Cup Race

Kiwi's Samantha Warriner and Kris Gemmell today won the last BG Triathlon World Cup on the schedule in Huatulco, Mexico. With the victory Warriner moves ahead of Australia’s Felicity Abram and becomes the 2008 BG Triathlon World Cup series champion. The win gives Gemmell his fourth career world cup victory.

The warm temperatures and challanging course made it a hard day af the office but the pair from New Zealand prevailed and managed to fend of American's Sarah Groff and Jarrod Shoemaker who both finished in 2nd place. After the race Gemmell stated “This was the hardest world cup… ever.”

On the men's side Javier Gomez of Spain retains his #1 World Ranking even thought he didn't race in Huatulco. The third place finish for Vidal Laurent from France today in Huatulco moved him from 14th place to 5th overall. Matt Reed was the highest ranking American on the men's side, he finished in 12th spot, Jarrod Shoemaker was 36th.

Last year's top ranking women Vanessa Fernandes finished just outside the Top 10 in 11th place overall. American Sarah Haskins a member of the 2008 Olympic team finished in 15th palce.

This is the last race in the 2008 ITU World Cup series and the last race for the series sponsor BG Group. After the Olympic games the ITU and Lagardère Sports sign deal to create new World Championship Series in 2009.
